    Wreck beach is a popular clothing optional ("nude") beach near Vancouver (and almost within sight of the airport where Dziekanski was tasered to death. It's also a beach where the RCMP tend to be very pedantic about the law -- one of which is that the beach closes at sunset... So, as they're often want to do, they started clearing the beach mere minutes after the sun had set.

    One of the people they came across was someone who had fallen asleep. When they woke him up and told him to leave the beach, he was a bit groggy, and slow to gather his stuff, get dressed and leave. ... so they tasered him.

    Now, I don't think that a groggy (nearly) naked guy is the kind of situation where use of a baton would be considered reasonable force. I don't even think it would be considered reasonable to use a half-nelson on the guy. Hell, the only thing that they could do for him being too late on the beach was to give him a ticket.

    | But he was tasered.

    My only explanation is that they intended the tasering exactly as torture -- and an exemplary action to other beach users that you quickly comply with orders to get off the beach at the stroke of sunset or else!

    I'm pretty darned public on the net and otherwise, and I don't think I need to be putting pictures of Peter and the boys up in any forum. Pictures of me can be seen and my info is available, but that's going a bit far dontchya think?

    There will always be a wreck beach around for those who wish to be 'Open'. I think the majority will stick to keeping private private.

    Actually, Wreck Beach (warning: crappy site, some very low-res nudity) is a nude beach, not (just) topless.

    A few years ago the Powers That Be wanted to build an "emergency access" road down to the beach, but the proposal was shelved after vociferous public protest.

    As it stands, you can get there either by walking at low tide along the beach from Spanish Banks, or down the cliff via many many steps.

    BTW: I generally agree with CmdrTaco's sentiments. I generally look to /. for news that wouldn't necessarily be easy to find elsewhere, especially technical/geek oriented stuff. This 'story' doesn't fit in that vein.

    If you haven't heard about the stock market sell-off by now

    • You probably don't care about it,
    • You're probably living the life of a techno-hermit, and
    • You probably don't read /.
    That having been said, it was probably worthwhile to give those of us geeks with an investment in the stock market someplace to blow off our steam.
