Using an Old Satellite Dish as a WLAN Antenna
=m8s=Dark Underlord writes "I was browsing for wireless stuff and came across this link that shows how to use an old satellite dish as an 802.11 antenna." The directions tout the range as being 10 miles given line of sight. We've had other stories about building antennas, but I think these are cooler because of their focused nature, but a Primestar dish is a little tougher to locate than a Pringles can or a floppy disk. -
Finding Dishes for 802.11b Service?
toygeek2002 asks: "With the proliferation of 802.11b, plans like this one are popping up all over. Where is the best place to FIND such dishes? Numerous Google searches have led to dead-ends, and calls to some local satellite TV shops tell me I'm gonna pay a lot for a 2-3' dish. Where's the best place to find old Primestar or other such dishes?" -
Long-Range Networking
ink and several others sent in the latest Cringely column where he discusses creating a long-range 802.11b network using high-tech tools like a telescope and bribery. Sean Clifford sent in guide to creating your own long-range antenna: "Have some old PrimeStar hardware laying around? Do something useful with it by turning it into an IEEE 802.11 wireless networking antenna. This electrical engineering professor uses an Airport, but any access point should work fine." If you're at all interested in this sort of stuff, get involved with one of the community wireless networks springing up. -
