Re:This was to be expected.
Here's a government memo (in Japanese) from December 1996 talking about Shinkansen construction; it mentions, among other things, that the government will pay 35% of construction costs for new Shinkansen lines. It also mentions a 20-year construction plan costing 1.2 trillion yen, so 35% isn't a small chunk.

Re:learn on slide film, nothing else.
Some of the better advice I've seen written lately. Eliminated the need for me say most of what I have to say, learned in my years of being photo editor for a Midwest university weekly newspaper.
I can't stress enough just how unsexy but totally reliable and capable the Pentax K1000 is. I have NEVER seen one break. I've yet to change the battery (operates the light meter) in mine after ten years - and I bought it used. It's a totally manual camera, but intuitive, and it just "feels" good in the hand. Add to that the fact that you can find hordes of good quality used lenses for this body in any camera exchange.
Lots of folks are "upgrading" to digital and fully auto cameras, leaving reliable workhorses like the K1000, and its many accessories, cheaper than they've ever been for the beginner. -
Time to get revenge on the GNAA
Listen up!
Lacking something to do, I join the #gnaa on efnet. Below is the subject:
* Now talking in #gnaa
* Topic is 'GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA - official GNAA template @ http://216.82.101.38/~timecop/gnaa-troll.txt'
* Set by JesuitX!~Snak@h-66-134-52-222.LSANCA54.covad.net on Mon Jul 14 10:08:34
Some dick is hosting the template to allow others to quickly cut and paste into a post window...
I looked through the server and found that his email address is:
timecop@japan.co.jp
I also suggest that everybody mirror
http://pepper.idge.net
and

Now go forth and slashdot him! (or at least use up all his bandwidth quota) -
Soko [AI vs human enjoyment]
Analysts at MIT Laboratory for Computer Science, who have been busy translating, rotating and dropping, have demonstrated what the rest of us suspected: Tetris is hard. Technically, it's 'NP-hard,'
Mybe they should be studying the correlation between how challenging problems are to AI, and how enjoyable they are for the human brain.
Obviously loads of people love Tetris. My favourite game is Sokoban, which is beloved of AI researchers as it is P Space complete.
Oh, and it's available for sed, as well as emacs :-)- Derwen

SureI was there last June. I took a tour of the Mahabalipuram Temple. The tour guide mentioned the sunken city. So apparently this isn't really all that new to them.
This site although in Japanese, does have some very nice photos of the shore temple that didn't sink. One thing to note is, these monuments were all carved from one stone.
As seen in this photo here this is all ONE rock.
Very impressive.

SX70 came from Polaroid
[Polaroid] were in trouble then because Kodak's SX-70 instant-picture technology that didn't require user intervention or a wastebasket
This doesn't make sense. The SX-70 was made by Polaroid, not Kodak. The code name was Aladdin. See this, for example.
