Re:CDE? Nooo... I think he's talking about
the DOCK, as in look at Ksmoothdock, and kxdock:

But, even in 1992, there was "Killer Windows Utilities", and in it was a floating, apps-customizable dock:
I still have my old book, but i cannot find it on the internets.
As MUCH as i applaud Apple for its design successes, i cannot back Jobs on this. At least not 100%. It's too obvious, hasn't been enforced, nor discouraged, and way too many Open Source implementations exist. Even IF the software DEVELOPERS cannot further deploy "finished" dockers, too much software capability exists such that nowadays, with a little finessing, end users can just "roll their own".
Use of IDE's and other exploiting well-available know-how will eventually tear down the onerous burden of software patents. The USPTO needs to STOP sucking up and the US needs to stop subsidizing its income stream from patents processing. After all, it's becoming all-too-easy to just do an end-run on the patents -- with a little creativity -- as go design patents, and maybe even *some* process patents that are dubious or outright *unworthy* of patent (artificial) protection.

Dock for KDE
There are several docks for KDE.
http://xqde.xiaprojects.com/

I don't use a dock, but I believe XQDE is written in QT 4, and from the last I read, it is supposed to be leaner and faster than its KXDocker predecessor. -

Re:Server side vs. Client sideI was torn on whether to get an Apple MacBook or a regular PC for work. I went with a PC because of the price, and I'm glad I did. OS X is poo compared to AIGLX, Beryl, and Kubuntu 6.10. If you haven't looked at it yet, you should check out Kiba-dock. It's only flaw is that it's a launcher and not a true "dock" in the sense that OS X's (and kxdocker) are. On that note, kxdocker is cool, and when it works, it works well, and integrates well with KDE, but it's in some weird state of incompleteness waiting for qt4 to be released.

Re:Been running this all night.I submitted an SVG version of the icon to the devs awhile back. Looks nice at any resize (though doesn't use a proper drop shadow yet, no gaussian support in inkscape) and has alpha transparency background.
Check it out. (128x128 submitted to the kxdocker project) -
Re:He hits the nail on the head
*Mouse with 3+ buttons - works great on up til 5 buttons. I think things get hairy after that, though.
*X multiple refresh rates/resolutions - Works great. A keystroke that I can't rememer cycles through them.
*Binary program for multiple distros? Duh, make a source tarball.
*Device driver without a kernel patch - May be some difficulties here, but the drivers for both my 8port serial card and 4port ethernet card (intel e100) required no patch or kernel rebuild.
* Copy/paste - Touche. It's all too window manager dependent, and poorly implemented. We either have some very weird ideas from the early X11 days, or unashamed copycatting of microsoft.
*Konqueror - Installed this just a few weeks ago, to check if my site looked decent outside of firefox. As a web browser it's ok, but as a file manager? Eek. There is only one file manager, it's called xterm/bash.
*Desktop shortcut - Why are you using some ass-tasting window manager that has such a concept? WindowMaker is nice, docking an appicon is easy. And pretty. Still, not enough room, so I've started using kxdocker for launching apps. Still keep my favorite dockapps, wmCalClock and such, so I've got that whole NextStep/OSX fusion thing going on (I even use an expose close!)...
*Closing the app that you've copied from kills its clipboard entry - Again, touche.
*Suse - Well, at least it's not Mandrake. (What's their new name again, mandrivel?) -
Re:Riiight.
What, you must mean apps? Well, I doubt someone will bother redoing firefox in GORM, but even for those KDE and gnome apps that you just must use, get a gnustepish theme. Gtk2step (gnome) and newstep (kde) both come to mind. Much nicer than the fugly widgets they have by default. I've even been working on an opera skin, myself.
Future projects of mine: patches for gimp/inkscape (ala gimpshop) that will move vertical scrollbars to the left, and replace file dialogs with Next-styled ones.
And for those that want things just a bit more OSXish than NeXTish, try out skippy (exposé) and kxdocker (OSX dock). Both work well in windowmaker (kxdocker needs you to upgrade to the latest windowmaker and you have to edit the configuration manually). My desktop looks somewhat weird, what with the NeXT dock on the left side for dockapps, and kxdocker at the bottom to lauch apps (had 4 minidocks at one point). Heh, and the orange on black xterms so that they look like old monochrome amber terminals...
