Re:article doesn't explain networkRunning with your numbers, look at this. Quoting you:
With 500GB drives, it would take 7340.032 drives to attain 3.5PB... with NO redundancy.
For the Deskstar7k500 [Please note that this isn't the "DeathStar" anymore, it was just when they put five instead of the industry-standard four platters into the DeskStar that they started dropping like flies, and I suppose the DeathStar reputation no longer stands. I've never owned one.]
The specifications [see footnote for a few other sites] stateHeight (mm) 25.4
146 mm) x (101.6 mm) x (25.4 mm) x 7 340 = 2.76551705 m^3,
Width (mm) 101.6
Depth (mm) 146
and, running with the article's numbers, let's see how much of 20 feet cubed that is... (article: the most storage, memory and power support into a 20...foot box -- note that a BOX of course is less cubic area than a 20-foot cube)....
((146 mm) x (101.6 mm) x (25.4 mm) x 7 340) / (20 (feet^3)) = 4.88316565...
WHAT? it's not a fraction, but larger by a factor of 4+??? Just for the hard-drives? Even when we assumed a CUBE???
Man, I want some of the shit that guy's smoking. I was expecting to debunk with just the hard-drives taking an impossibly large percentage of the proposed 20-foot "box". But....man. Cringely must not have done even a basic sanity check. (And remember, I'm pretty sure he didn't have a 20 foot high, 20 foot wide box in mind, or he would have said cube. To a writer, a "20-foot box" sounds like an elongated storage container, e.g. 8x8x20 feet.... BTW that's the first hit for 20 foot storage container, I can only assume a writer would have such a thing in mind...)
English and math, people, English AND math.

What do you see wrong with this pic? Check out the heatshrink on the bundle of lines next to the Toriods. Loose... it isn't even shrunken properly. Then, check out the main PCB to the left of the silver screw on the lower left of the pic, right by the IC... the board is BENT!! HELLOOOO!! This is a shoddy piece of sh!t! -

I hate to be an ass...
...but the build quality is awful. Check this image: cramped cables (without need), restricted airflow, solder joints holding weight, bent circuit boards, minuscle heatsinks, panel mount parts glued with silicone... no wonder it needs two fans (and one is 120mm)!!!
Come on, i know ATX power supplies are limited in size, but i have an "el-cheapo" Chinese 300w PSU which works like a charm and it's much better designed and built. It looks cool, and it seems that it's very good at regulating the output voltages, but you can get that elsewhere without the glitz. No mention of it's price either.
To be honest, i wouldn't want that powering my PC. -
Re:What I do...
But if you're naive about the net and you go online maybe once a month...then you're a raw piece of meat in a pool full of sharks.
I am one of those naive that really don't have a clue what hardware review sites to trust. My comfort is that I am probably far from alone, in this matter.
To assist me and other naives(sp?), please join this silly poll and review the following sites (regarding credibility) with a scale ranging from 1 to 10, where 1 is "No credibility at all" and 10 is "Perfect credibility, these guys wouldn't post a biased review for world domination":
