  1. Nearly a state-run monopoly... on Anonymous Lists Sites. and VoIP Services, Blocked In the UAE · · Score: 4, Informative

I deploy there quite a bit, and there used to be only one option for phone calls, Etisalat. Before I learned about VPN services, I had no choice but to get screwed by them (it was about a dollar per minute in a prepaid cell card). Another company finally came in from Dubai (Du) but I am not sure what the rates are, as I was already using a VPN and never needed to use the cell. In any case, the UAE is the perfect hypocritical example. While the locals are running around doing whatever they want, non-locals are fairly restricted (unless you have money and knew where to go).

Cingular doesn't support Firefox?? That's funny, because I have been doing all of my online bills and such with Cingular for about two years now. Hmm... Maybe you have another issue. The only site that I use that I can't access with Firefox is Clark Pest Control. They require Windows, and Internet Explorer. With Clark, I get screwed, as I end up having to use my wife's machine, as their site doesn't really care for Slackware...

And, you can remove Internet Explorer, using a nifty little tool called nLite.

Then, check out the main PCB to the left of the silver screw on the lower left of the pic, right by the IC... the board is BENT!! HELLOOOO!! This is a shoddy piece of sh!t!

You have got to be kidding me... Fed Ex?? For someone so smart, that sure was an idiotic answer. Come on... Do you think that he REALLY thought that FedEx only worked 4 months out of the year? I think that he either got bored of winning, or they forced him off because the producer may have thought that the viewers were bored of seeing him on the show (it becomes predictable when the guy wins 70 or so shows).

  5. Windows and the Air Force on Air Force Orders Up A Custom Windows Monoculture · · Score: 4, Insightful

I just got out of the AF after 8 years of Avionics maintenance, and this is actually what the Air Force needs. For about the year or so before I got out, they bought an INSANE amount of Dell systems. We were running PII 350s, and 450s through 2001 or 2002 (If you were an officer, you were lucky, and had a 1.5Ghz system, but not us enlisted folks). Talk about frustrating... There is actually a lot more computer work done that just the accounting and forms that you think... everything from documentation of maintenance actions to a database, to doing the usual forms, troop performance reports, etc. Anyways, the AF has a HORRIBLE track record with software. They changed the personnel information system to a new, fangle-dangle thing, hailing it as a new wave. Unfortunately, by the time it was implemented, it was outdated, and never tested. Troops spent anywhere from 6 months to a year and a half getting paid at a lower rate, because the system wouldn't register their promotions (just one example of the poor quality of this system). If you had ever worked around the AF 'Small Computers' shop, you would know that they CANNOT handle Linux, or anything other than Windows. These people are MORONS. It got to the point that when one of my workcenter's 6 systems failed, I ended up formatting it and reinstalling Win because when the system was unrecoverable, they would rather spend 5 days running Norton AV than spending 1 hour reinstalling the OS. They always thought a virus was involved for some reason (that tells you about the quality and security of the networks, I suppose). In any case, I witnessed the incompetence first-hand, and think that, although Win sucks, the AF can't handle anything less user-friendly.

  6. FF not a Threat?!? Come on... on Microsoft Says Firefox Not a Threat to IE · · Score: 1

This guy says that he has never installed or used FF, and that fact is obvious. If he had, he would see that they have trouble brewing... I wonder if all of MS employees are FORCED to use MS products exclusively, sort of like advertising (or maybe it is like the Chevy dealer that drives a Ford...?).
"English reiterated that features such as tabbed browsing are not important to IE users."
This is ridiculous! This is one reason I moved to FF a couple of years ago (I think it was that long ago). What this tells me is that most IE users are just like AOL users... They don't know what the heck they are doing... Older people and kids. They settle for what they can get because it suits their needs. They don't use the computer enough to really care about the small stuff. This is similar to what someone else already said... All they see is that you click this button to print, this button to turn off, etc. So, for a majority of the people that barely scratch the surface of their computer's potential, you know, the ones that don't know what processor they are running, IE might be fine for their needs, so they don't want to explore. HOWEVER, EVERY system I have administered (or formatted) gets FF installed, IE is removed with nLite, and the people are converted. And you know what? They LOVE it. Granted, they never would have switched on their own, but I got tired of making house calls for systems that are full of garbage, and I couldn't convince them to switch to linux, so I settled for the next best thing, and forced them to use a browser that doesn't let silly little scripts take control of things. I have YET to receive EVEN ONE minor complaint about it.
