Re:How much of that is entirely Microsoft's fault
also try http://www.zimbra.com/ , it have several good features
you can always use Thunderbird+Lightning addon for the client and calendarserver for the server: https://wiki.debian.org/HowTo/...
you can replace exchange with http://www.zentyal.org/ or replace outlook and keep exchange with http://davmail.sourceforge.net... as a proxy for other clients
on windows you can also replace outlook with http://www.emclient.com/ and on mac, use their own clients, most mac users prefer then
you can try other apps/servers in this list:

Re:Exchange
We actually do have full-scale Exchange equivalents. A sister comment mentioned Sogo, which is also an outstanding product, but let me draw your attention to Zentyal – an almost drop-in replacement for Exchange.

Re:Exchange
It's GPL. The community page makes that a bit clearer. Now I do believe they have some proprietary extensions for something but I can't seem to remember what now...

Re:help
Zentyal also has one. It is a transparent replacement for Exchange.

You can install it and leave the clients in place while you decide what to do next.

File server + ACLs + ldapCurrently running under Zentyal over Ubuntu 10.04.
Each family member has an account, parents have RW access everywhere, kids are generally RO or have no access at all depending on the folder.

Depends on what you want to do...
Take a look at http://www.zentyal.org/ .

zentyal/zarafa
I just moved a smaller business (about 40 people) to zentyal. http://www.zentyal.org/ includes all sorts of features, like a PDC if you want one, ldap for user management, vpn, groupware (uses zarafa, which is excellent) and many, many other features.

Re:I am testing some FOSS software for my company.
I have been working on the same thing for a company I help out.. Make sure you check out zarafa (www.zarafa.com)
... It is very, very slick...
Also,
http://www.zentyal.org/ is a great project. Integrated tools, based on Ubuntu Long Term Server.. includes a Samba PDC and file server, LDAP, chat, zarafa, etc. There is also VPN, and internet gateway tools as well.. Pretty slick tool for quick to get started. -

Zentyal, we love it.
Falling off a log easy to set up, we love Zentyal (formerly eBox)
Basically, it's what happens when your easy-peasy home router and a fully fledged business server had a baby.
http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Features
Personally, I use it as a windows file sharing server, VPN, DNS, DHCP and gateway.
At work we use it to build routers and VPN servers.

Re:Still best to host your own mail.
Sorry that I'm posting AC, but I've modded on a good discussion.
There are other alternatives than configuring your own: Clear, formerly ClarkConnect; SME Server; and Zentyal to name a few.
I mixed up my own for a while, then switched to SME because my kids were growing up and seemed to want Winders on their computers. (My wife, also, and I didn't favor trying configure Samba.) I was looking for a couple of specific features that looked like they would never appear in SME, so I stayed up most of one night and migrated to E-box (now Zentyal). I've been specific about using only maildir and lots of backups, so migration wasn't an issue.
Best parts? I don't have to think about my ISP and e-mail storage, and many of the nitty-gritty configuration issues are cared for by people more knowledgeable than I. I don't think about spam: It's taken care of. My MTA is the same as is used in the stable release of Ubuntu, so I presume that it's taken care of. (There's also some IDS or another that sent me an e-mail that I fretted over, only to conclude that my server was fine.) My domain was blacklisted just once, while I was configuring things myself. There's a fourth problem that you imply: I let my ISP handle outgoing e-mails. The big sites don't like *dsl* that they get in the reverse lookup that they seem to do automatically. (I only ever had trouble with UCLA.)
The only thing that I don't like is that I've had to put a lot of trust in those who are configuring the distros that I've used. Seems to me that they're doing a better job than I do. Even when I switched from e-smith, it was only through a desire for addition features; otherwise, I was quite happy.
