Britain does that too. They call it the 'metric pound'.
I live in Britain and I've never heard 500g called a "metric pound" nor just "pound". Probably because the imperial pound (454g) is still in quite common use and different enough that it'd be an issue. (*)
;-)
OTOH, the term "metric tonne" is quite common and only slightly different from the imperial (long) ton. Which, of course, isn't the same as the American (i.e. "short") ton that *does* vary quite a bit from the other two. That brings me on to something else... the traditional units that Americans use aren't even the same worldwide (e.g. the American pint is around 20% smaller than the UK one, fluid ounces are also different), i.e. the Americans' so-called "English" units aren't the same as the imperial ones used in England- or the rest of the UK- any more!
FWIW, pigs will fly before the Americans go decimal. Not my problem for the most part- I'm not planning on living there- but I do find it ironic that the Americans chose a sensibly decimal currency instead of adopting the "pounds shillings and pence" system (used in Britain before 1971) like they did with weights.
Though decimalisation only happened around five years before I was born, growing up in the 1980s, any remnants of that system I encountered (and hearing about it from my parents) seemed bizarre, confusing and anachronistic even then, like something from another age more like 100 years previous.
Admittedly, when you're 8 years old, anything even a few years before your time seems old, but while I understand most of the "LSD" money now, it still seems like something from another era, alien to me.
Anyway... I'm surprised that Americans didn't reject that Euro-socialist godless commie decimal system for their money and adopt LSD. How about it? Twelve pennies in a shilling, twenty shillings to the pound (240 pennies to the pound), guineas (one pound and one shilling), and coins like florins (two shillings), 2/6 (two-and-six, i.e. two shillings and sixpence), tanner (half a shilling), blah blah blah....
It was called "LSD" because you had to be *on* LSD to understand it.
So... since you all love your bizarre, non-decimal "English but no longer used in England" measurements so much, I'm sure you'll love Pounds, Shillings and Pence. And farthings. And thrupenny bits. (^_^)
(*) Ironically, according to Wikipedia, they do use that term elsewhere in Europe.

Put my corpse in a canoe. push it through the drive thru as a lit arrow sets my rotting flesh aflame. Curse the godless sky. Bury me at Arbys
Remember guys, when the Russians do it, it's because they are evil and godless savages, but when our government (You're probably in a country that's part of the Five Eyes, or complacent to it) does it, it's for freedom and security!
And if some foreign country invaded the US and our population fought back, we'd be "freedom fighters"...but when our troops invade/occupy a foreign country the people fighting us are "terrorists" and "insurgents", because nobody should fight us - we "own the world".
Remember guys, when the Russians do it, it's because they are evil and godless savages, but when our government (You're probably in a country that's part of the Five Eyes, or complacent to it) does it, it's for freedom and security!
The scripture from earlier confirms to those of us who trust in the promise of God's kingdom --and who see dozens of bible promises already fulfilled-
Pardon me, I might be one of those godless heathens but I suffered through quite a few years of Christian teachings - what exactly has the Bible promised us apart from forgiveness from our sins and heavenly bliss in the afterlife? The old testament was as I remember it mostly punishments. Punishment for eating the apple, building Babel's tower, Sodom and Gomorrah and of course the flood to wipe out everything. We're all sinners from the original sin and if we don't repent it's hell.
The new testament was pretty much all allegories on how we should live, there were a few "one-off" miracles while Jesus lived but all those who saw him raise the dead, turn water to wine or walk on water has been dead for 2000 years. So there's good and evil in the world, but that's pretty indistinguishable from good and bad people with free will without God or Satan pulling anyone's strings.
So I'm curious, what is it you feel God has promised? And what do see that makes you feel he's delivered? Because I can't find a lick of difference, the devout believers get injured, sick and die like the rest of us and terrible sins go by without being struck down from the heavens. It's of course possible that all of this gets tallied up and justice is served in the afterlife, but here and now in this life I can't find any sign of God. Maybe I should ask this in the opposite direction, if you were to envision a world without God what exactly would be different?
But the flip side is that the Cold War generation also understands the difference between an existential threat (the USSR was an aggressively expansionist power, and its words were backed with nuclear weapons and the capability to deliver them anywhere on the planet) and a bunch of incompetent barbarians (the terrorists are aggressively expansionist but they have no ability to project power outside of their own fiefdoms) who, even on their best month, managed to do kill fewer people than traffic accidents did.
Furthermore, the Cold War generation understands what happens when you have a society based on mass surveillance, and that it's generally a Bad Thing(tm) if you're trying to have the economic growth generally associated with freer forms of social management. "Papers please" and "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" were lines in Cold War movies that were uttered by the bad guys - whether they wore shiny black uniforms with spiffy red armbands, or dull olive grey uniforms with spiffy red-and-yellow logos on their shoulder patches.
The real problem is that Cold War politicians have decided you can have a surveillance state without sacrificing economic growth (to be fair to them, WW2 Germany doing it with brute force and East Germany doing it with an army of bureaucrats merely proved that it didn't scale, but the Chinese post-Tienanmen beta test of economic reforms while maintaining totalitarian control worked pretty well), and are manipulating Cold War techno-ignoramuses into thinking that the terrorists are an existential threat on a par with the former USSR.
Yes, the generation that sponsored the SR-71 to keep a close watch on godless communists and who commissioned astonishingly accurate satellite surveillance to keep the bad guys from taking over the world like a series of dominoes are also responsible for approving a system to keep close watch on the scary Muslims. The scary Muslims are even more dangerous than the godless Communists, because they don't concentrate inside any particular national boundaries. Therefore, it's necessary but unfortunate that every person on the planet be monitored in order to determine whether they are one of "Us" or one of "Them." The Cold War generation understands the "Us" and "Them" dichotomy, and invasive surveillance helps to distinguish.
They don't have to know how the technology works, and it may even help to be ignorant of the uselessness of so much data on so many innocent people. The people who designed the SR-71 are at the top end of their generation's technological bell curve. The people who sponsored it are at the bottom end.
Communism is every operation mockingbird and mighty wurlitzer CIA media operation going back decades. Nevermind what the KGB or others did/still do.
There are your communists right there, brainwashing the population of the world into compliance with globalist communist economic objectives.
Here in the U.S., godless communism is the "Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives" (not to mention blasphemy) -- the merger of "God" and "State", the "State" must "provide" for everyone like "God" formerly used to
"Linux" is "communist" ? Not even close.
MickeySoft has been communist from their inception, and they LOVE communism the same as every other large corporation in pretty much every country around the world.
No wonder the communists have won...you think "Linux" is communism.
Are you the only opposition? We are all doomed to godless communism and totalitarianism I guess.
You are the best the opposition has got? We are all fucked, forever and forever.
Communism is mastery learning and Pavlovian conditioning (even Pavlov was against it being used on human beings for political purposes)
Start with all the educational institutions around the WORLD that use communist methods. Start with Khan Academy and "flipped classroom"
That is your communism right there. Courtesy of Microsoft, Apple, Google, the U.S. Dept. of Edu, the finance industry, etc.
Big Business LOVES communism. International "capitalists" LOVE communism.
Free trade "libertarians" LOVE communism and fund it every chance they get.
An undefined "Linux" stereotype that you can't even name members of., or where their funding comes from, or how they are brainwashing people...is just not on the "communist" radar.
IF anything, if there is any truth to your assertion that "Linux is communism"...then the reality is Linux is very late on the scene, so we have some possibilities:
1) Linux wants capitalism but must succumb to communist currency/education/everything else, just the same as any other movement, because that is what the wealthy folks demand and have pushed onto and enslaved the whole world with
2) Linux is apolitical, not concerned with such things either way; there may be sects and subgroups with strong opinions, but there is no requirement or enforced political viewpoint
3) Linux was created and funded by communists, and is just one small blip on the communist plan, which was already achieved decades ago, long before Linux ever appeared...funded by "capitalists" all the way, from the very start
4) you are a complete brainwashed fucking moron and/or just ignorant
Even if you have supporting evidence for 3) and maintain that, Linux is just one of 10 million heads of the communist hydra.
You can cut off the supposed Linux head of the communist party, so what? Wouldn't change a thing.
Linux is collectivism at best. Has no communist culture, is independent of communist "currency", does not mandate communist brainwashing.
There may or may not be overlap, so what?
You are pissing in the communist red hurricane. You already lost. Long before Linux showed up on the scene.
Fighting a straw man. Whoop-de-doo. Hooray, you want to destroy what is, at best, although you have offered no proof, a shadow, a puppet!
"stop hitting yourself" as they say.
If "Linux is communism" then the communists have won, the brainwashing is 100% complete. Noone will ever know the truth, because your disinformation will cancel it out.
Eustace Mullins' ghost will happily tell you there is no "right" or "left"
Will happily tell you Reagan's administration was full of liberals. Will happily tell you about Bush (senior was CIA director) and Harriman ties to Nazis.
Believe it or not, there used to be some actual "honest" Republicans on the "right"
Mostly all dead.
International corporate communism/socialism won over a century ago.
No "right" or "left."
There is no "U.S.A." of any actual effect or relevance.
There is no U.S. government, has not been for a long time. Just shadows and spooks operating behind the scenes.
Any honest person "left" or "right" I have found seems to reach the same conclusion. Might disagree on the "solutions" but pretty much agrees what the country formerly known as the "U.S.A." currently is.
We are being spoonfed and conditioned an image that we "sell" to the world of what the "U.S." is.
It is just one giant corporation to them, what matters is our stock price goes up, nothing else.
The "U.S." is long gone, deceased, kaput, totally out of business. On permanent hiatus. Out of order. Not in right now, can you leave a message?
"follow the money" and you more or less hit the same groups of people every time.
"left" or "right" doesn't really matter.
The "right" are all godless corporate communists and the supposed "left" are too.
The end.
Pretend modern-day "Republicans" (neo-cons) are all godless marxists and collectivists...because they are.
Pretend "libertarians" promoting "free trade" have been doing that for > 100 years, funding and building up Hitler, Soviet Russia, and countless other supposed "enemies."
There is no actual "U.S." and no actual "left" or "right" around here -- just billions of "useful idiots" wearing different color jerseys, pretending and acting like they are "enemies" but all of them actual play for the same corporate communist team.
Pretend "Obama is a Marxist!" people are 100 years WAYYYYYY too late, and are in fact @#$%^!@ stupid. Irrellevant noise. Controlled "opposition"
The U.S. missed the "capitalist" and "communism" boat over a century ago. They were both crushed and destroyed.
International powers decided to merge them together and play a game of "divide and conquer" to make the 1% richer.
In the U.S. we just have a corporate communist red sky, bloody corporate communist red waters, and corporate communist acid rain infecting us all.
The U.S. is 100% corporate communist red. No actual "U.S." at all.
No "left" or "right" of any actual effect.
The state government is saying that the federal government has no right to interfere with the state's right to interfere with local government.
Which is true. See my post above for a full explanation.
North Carolina legislature has just passed a law that all RF generated in North Carolina, must by law, stay in North Carolina, and none generated outside may pass into North Carolina.
There is a lawsuit pending against the laws of Physics. DEbates are schedule with Bill Nye the Science guy and the IEEE. Phlogiston theory accounts for this, and is the actual truth, not this godless radio physics not to be owned communist stuff. so we must teach the controversy.
True. Though societies without capitalism are generally godless, genocidal, and tyrannical dictatorships.
That you're aware of.
I think that's the important part you've missed out.
Also, nice snowjob equating the small group of "Christian nutbars" with what is essentially an extremist medieval religious state. Christianity was there not-so-long ago.
I wouldn't mind betting if you were to look at the wiki page on Christian terrorism you'd find a few new things that you weren't aware of. Perhaps even "Hi, you're starving so we'll give you food, but you have to convert to Christianity first.... here's your bible. Convert or starve, it's god's will."
But you go on living in your "My god is the one true god!" world. That's what you'll do, and it's what they'll continue to do. If you're anything like my friend who is a loving peaceful Christian, you still want your guns so you can kill anyone who tries to take your freedom, and you want your non-Christian state to go and kill the evil Muslims who are nothing more than criminal terrorists who follow a false god, you should probably take a nice and long look in the mirror before getting back to hating those evil godless sons-of-bitches.
They really must die. It's the way of the true religion of peace
Religion causes wars and suffering because it engenders certainty in people about what constitutes "good" and "bad" (laws, morals, whatever). Of course, there is no objective measure for good and bad, but deluded people think they have good reasons for their prejudices and begin to see others as idiots that should be treated like second class citizens.
Your comment is therefore deeply ironic. You've written yourself right into the class of people you hate and demonstrated Eric Hoffer's aphorism-- that although ours is a godless world, it is anything but irreligious.
1) the quote was never disputed by the WH, the staff at the epoch or bush himself. In fact if you read what rob sherman reported afterward instead of deniying the WH tries to justify that what Bush said won't affect policy. They would not state that if it was a false quote.
2) it is typical of the christian conservative of the epoch to think something similar
3) it is a step up from the definition of atheist as "wicked , godless" the albeit archeic but previous definition.
Frankly it would have been easy to debunk this from the WH. But they always avoided to even take a stance or denie it. As for the point of the other journalist not hearing it, how many of them simply dismissed it as a campaign wink at his conservative base ? And simply did not see it as news ? Heck if you do not pay too much attention all you get is "we are christian nation blah blah one nation under gods - OK not reporting worth he is pandering". The atheist things could have been misheard by Sherman , but Bush and co never denied having said this. in fact IIRC later he said in 2004 something similar in the imius morning radio show about the elligibility of an atheist.
So suck it troll.
Another thing, is when we do get "welfare" finally (food stamps) all you hear is "they bought STEAK????!?!?!?!"
We have a planned economy, and a million levers and incentives, to lull everyone into compliance.
We have no "socialism" without strings attached.
We get the corporate-planned economy, the kind where corporations have purchased and are above the government.
You don't have to be a "Bircher" or "paleo-conservative" to see that American corporations funding Soviet Russia all through the "Cold War" as well as Hitler (IBM a big one, others) is a game that continues today, from Osama Bin Laden (accusations differ if he was "CIA trained" -- I don't believe anyone disputes he fought alongside CIA-funded operatives against "Soviets"...Muslims are somewhat "neither east nor west" and don't exactly appreciate godless communism) to Saddam and ever onward.
The U.S. plan is pretty much do business and fund/overthrow anyone when it suits the corporatist agenda (Iran 1950s anyone?) and then turn on them the second they seek independence.
No, we don't do "socialism" nor do we even do "U.S." we do "global empire building" and this invariably is "make global corporations happy" and they always prefer rigged corporate handouts at taxpayer expense, at home and abroad, and communism (government-enforced monopoly, all competition outlawed) to "capitalism"
So we don't really have any "socialism" in the U.S. nor do we actually have any "capitalism" -- we have planned economy for the benefit of "private" corporations.
It used to be corporations could only exist and operate if they were "within" Government...and tax-exempt foundations (such as religions) likewise were only tax-exempt if they restrained from political purposes...those days are long gone.
If you want any truth in how the U.S. works, you either have to find the actual capitalists and actual Republicans (Birchers and crew) or you have to find the "far left" (green party and similar) ... both may disagree on what the "solution" is, but they are both happy to tell you we have neither "capitalism" nor "socialism" nor "communism" (Europeans sometimes point out, communism there is "no money" -- whether fiat currency counts as "abolition of actual money" is debatable, of course; perhaps we are already there).
Americans are stupid, gullible, and fall into the same traps over and over again.
If there is anything going on besides
capitalism (thesis) + communism or socialism (antithesis) = worldwide corporate communism/socialism/welfare (synthesis)
could've fooled me........ most cries of "down with capitalism" or people who use "socialism" or "communism" as scare words, have no clue what they are talking about.
I have found, from honest people, "left" or "right" there is widespread agreement the U.S. has corporatism, corporate communism, corporate socialism, corporate welfare. No "socialism" and no actual "capitalism" either. Just a rigged game, to make (mostly global) corporations happy.
Again, regardless of "socialism" or "capitalism" or any other politics, U.S. only cares about "global economy" and nothing else.
So, we get "free trade" (rig everything towards global directions) promoted by useful idiot "libertarians" as being some solution to "peace" when in fact it is just more handouts and special privileges written into law for foreign workers (say what you want about "Free trade" beign good or bad...special laws for foreigners is not "capitalism" it is "Rigged" and "planned" and a "monopoly" written into law...the only actual way to get "Free trade" is all nations adopt the same set of laws...good luck with that. It is not easy to say what nations the U.S. should/should not trade with, but the "free trade" folks never mention that special laws for guest workers is "protectionism")
Basically, if you want any actual honesty, or any actual debate, you won't find it in the U.S. mainstream.
I honestly think most people with a clue a) already left and/or
I do see the need to stop polluting our water, air and land.
This whole thing reminds me of the entire "Lead in Gasoline" fight back in the 60's.
I wish liberals would abandon the "climate change" mantra and focus on air and water quality. It's fairly easy to prove that we are poisoning everything.
Why do "liberals" have to "abandon the climate change mantra" to do something about air and water quality? Can't "conservatives" do something about air and water for their own reasons? Howabout a clean air and water bill, bi-partisan, the "conservatives" support it because we are "poisoning everything" and "liberals" support it because of "climate change". There. Bill passed, clean air and water, and Richard Nixon smiles in his grave. Everybody wins.
Except, THAT WOULD SUCK, because if Republicans vote with Democrats, Republicans might jeopardize their precious "brand" of being against all things liberal, and then voters might get confused, not give as much of a shit at the next election from one party to the other, and those safe majorities might not be so safe anymore. Furthermore, the ultra-libertarians in the Tea Party wing will attack the incumbents in the Primaries, claiming that the new regulation for protecting clean air and water is evil, liberal, communist, twinkle-toed Kenyan-Muslim interference on one's God-given right to pour shit all over your own land if you damn-well want to. And, of course, who's going to PAY for your clean air and water? Regulators, agents, inspectors, prosecutors, none of them work for free! Our Lord Grover Norquist will not permit any new taxes for yet more wasteful government spending!
Nope, too risky. New election cycle coming up. Gotta keep up the pressure, and cooperation doesn't do any good for anybody.
On the other hand, making friends with big industrial polluters yields nice election contributions, which pays for TV, radio, and print ads to whip up rage and FUD against the other Party, at least until election day.
Clean air and water? Not this year. Not next year either. In fact, never so long as it might validate those foul godless liberals and that *spit* asshat Al Gore with his "climate change" bullshit.
But thanks for your vote.
