That's ivory-tower, intellectual, East-coast, effeminate, godless, unmanly, etc., etc., etc. thinking there, pardner. Real men act, not think, and trust in God to sort the mess out. From 2004:

"Bush's budget for next year includes $10.7 billion for missile defense—over twice as much money as for any other single weapons system. This summer, he's planning to start deploying the first components of an MD system—six anti-missile missiles in Alaska, four in California, and as many as 20 more, in locations not yet chosen, the following year. Yet, except by sheer luck, these interceptors will not be able to shoot down enemy missiles. Or, to put it more precisely, Bush is starting to deploy very expensive weapons without the slightest bit of evidence that they have any chance of working."

Yes, he did. He wanted to destroy religion in the Soviet Union and build an Atheist society.

Yeah, which is why he funded the Russian Orthodox Church at the time, so long as they praised him in their sermons.

Stalin didn't persecute religion for the sake of doing so. He persecuted those parts of it that were in opposition to his rule to maintain power (it just happened to be that very large parts of the Church were opposed to "godless communism"). As any other ruler, he did support his pet priests, though.

Lenin, now - this guy was really persecuting believers. For him, though, it was also a part of communist ideology as he understood it - he saw religion as a "reactionary counter-revolutionary force", so it made perfect sense to line priests up against the wall, if that's already done to other "reactionaries" (who may or may not be atheist).

Probably because the invading Nazi's were winning support from the local populace by re-opening churches that Stalin, working with the Society of the Godless, had closed.

But those are not relevant to our discussion because their beliefs had nothing to do with the cause of the murder

    From wikipedia:

Stalin followed the position adopted by Lenin that religion was an opiate that needed to be removed in order to construct the ideal communist society. To this end his government promoted atheism through special atheistic education in schools, massive amounts of anti-religious propaganda, the antireligious work of public institutions (especially the Society of the Godless), discriminatory laws, and also a terror campaign against religious believers. By the late 1930s it had become dangerous to be publicly associated with religion

The WTO is certainly among the lesser evils. In the old-old days, when the uber-wealthy wanted to protect their property rights, they had to hire mercenaries. It was cruel, but at least it was honest.

Later in history, the developments of religion and nationalism enabled those on top to use mere rhetoric to convince the poor to die protecting business interests. Protect the King's land from the godless invaders! Fly under the stars and stripes to defend the fruit company's interests in the banana republics!

With the advent of conscription, however, those who owned the world could merely summon slaves to make sure their property remained under their control (Korea, Vietnam).

But the Owners didn't entirely control the new phenomenon of mass media, and popular opinion turned. Slavery wasn't an option, so we tried espionage (CIA) and even old-school mercenaries (Gulf War I) to protect businesses interests .

The uber-rich aren't going to stop trying to protect "their" property, but with the Internet turning media upside-down, it will be harder than ever to get the poor to agree to conscription, crusades or even merc work. Using trade embargoes via the WTO is probably better than outright war for this purpose, so long as they don't embargo to the point of mass starvation.

(For the record: I'm not anti-capitalist. Humanity just sucks when it comes to war and money. A progressive capitalism in which you can get rich but you can't take it with you [high inheritance tax to fund education of the poor] sounds most appealing to me.)
