Filtering E-mail for Viruses using Linux?

Cliff Hammerschmidt asks: "I'm looking for a package to scan incoming and outgoing e-mails for viruses. I'd like to do it on the Linux server that handles the e-mail. Nice features would include automatically responding to infected messages to let the sender know they are infected, the automatic cleaning of viruses from attachments, and automatic updating of virus data." Two and a half years ago it was safe to simply open your e-mail, regardless of content. Now thanks to the wonders of integration, e-mail viruses exist. How reliable are the programs that test for these new critters?

TrendMicro has a solution. I thought MacAfee did but I can't find it. I'd recommend talking to the guys and Sendmail.com and getting a referal from them (assuming you're using Sendmail).

I'm unaware of an open-source effort in this area, which is kind of surprising really, because it's an easy project and it would benefit substancially from having lots of eyeballs. I guess the shortage of good Linux viruses (thank God) is limiting growth in this area.

i found this link a while back but havn't had a chance to check it out

requires the use of an external virus scanner. i've tested it briefly with
mcafee's vscan for unix, and that seems to work fine.

Check out Inflex (its in Freshmeat somewhere...) and Sophos AntiVirus. I'm using them with Sendmail and I've caught a couple of virii in the last week.
