New Mars Images Released

ModernViking writes "Malin Space Science Systems has just released the second set of narrow-angle images from the Mars Observer Camera (MOC) on board the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft. This brings the total image count available online to ~57,500 images (surpassing the ~55,000 images taken by the Viking Orbiters during the mid-70's)."

Thanks, Michael, for not posting this on the main page. Otherwise, all the pretty pictures would be slashdotted.

They even have 3-D images... look. It makes me wish i had a pair of those red/blue glasses to see what it looks like (as if i can't guess). Don't get too excited now... you aren't really there... it's just an optical illusion.

The exploration of a different planet than the earth might teach us so much, just think about how much we learned about our own planet, the exploration of Mars might help us along in our goal to keep going further in space.

What I fail to see in here is why are photo's taken from orbit so important. Of course I know that even if you take 1*10^999999 foto's it will not capture a complete picture of the planet in all it's detail, but are marslander projects not a manyfold times more important. Because to be able to take samples and examine those would be alot more usefull.

It seems to me that we could learn about what all Mars could have to offer, maybe not as a place to life but more as a refuel station perhap ? I dont know in how far this is possible but this could prove as a big help to explore new worlds, and who knows even bring us a step closer to meeting new civilisations
