Another VC for BSDi

BSD Today carried this press release, announcing that BSDi has accepted a 4 million dollar investment from another japanese venture capital investment firm, GLQ Intrepia, led by a strategic partner Plat'Home, a japanese Open Source hardware vendor. I know this news is a few days old, but its interesting. Most of BSDi's recent big investments have come from Japan, where it is said BSD is almost as big as Linux is here.

Wow, congratulations. I'm just wondering how a company can expand that quickly- I imagine that a good portion would be spent on advertising, and then some more spent for investments/acquisitions, and probably some left liquid.

It will be interesting to see how this newfound capital will affect an already established company such as BSDi (note: I'm aware that BSDi is a young company, but it's really just an expanded BSDI: which is an established company)

Yup. Great things are afoot :-)

The challenge of course is spending the money -- wisely. BSDi has a fairly small core of Really Good engineers, and they are obviously going to hire. That of course is a challenge in the current, still overheated, market.

What makes you say Plat'Home is an "Open Source hardware vendor?" (what is an "open source hardware vendor," anyway?) As far as I can tell (judging from their website), they are a cryptography company using a strange security-through-obscurity algorightm that maps nearly every letter, number, etc. to this strange box character. Looks very hard to crack...wonder if anyone has made any progres...
