Loki Files For Chapter 11 Protection
yamla writes: "Loki is dead!" and points to a Linux Review article which says the gaming company has filed for protection from creditors under bankruptcy laws. Yamla continues: "Read about it here. This is terrible news! I have paid for some of their games and they were always at least as good as the Windows versions. I hope Loki can pull out of bankruptcy and keep going but if not, it will be our loss." There is also a story at LinuxToday (pointed out by reader Beee) which draws from the Linux Review report. Meanwhile, the Loki site appears business-as-usual. Filing for bankruptcy protection is not the same as being "out of business," but it's uncomfortably close.
I used to dual boot windows 98 and linux. I'd only ever boot into windows to play games and relax. Since Quake 3 and Tribes 2 now run just as well if not better under linux these days I don't bother with windows anymore, and I don't imagine I'm alone.
To microsoft, this is another erosion of their market share, and it's not just the server market anymore. So I think they're out to squash linux gaming like a bug before it *really* takes off.
"Gee little dynamix finance company, it'd be really nice if you dropped your support for tribes 2. Gee Mr Loki creditor, we can make life very unpleasant for you unless you help us out with a little problem."
Isn't it about time for Code Red IV now?
:wq
I own 6 Loki games, all of which were purchased at full price because I wanted to see them succeed and now they're filiing for chapter 11?!?
I would just like to give a big FUCK YOU to anyone who owns a windows copy of Quake III. If I had any money right now (starting school is a bitch) I would purchase more games, even if i didn't want them, or as gifts or something. This makes me so angry I can even begin to describe it. You people* suck.
*to those of you who purchased loki products, i aplogize for taking up your time with this vent of anger. you kick ass. if you ARE/WERE a loki member, you indeed kick so much ass, i cannot thank you enough. i hope this is not the end, it would make me very sad

And I never ended up installing it. Perhaps I can sell my copy on eBay for beaucoup bucks now? =)

You sound like an total ass kisser. Shutup.
thx
debain better than win2k hahahahha
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
BUY something??? For Linux??? How incredibly naive.
Seriously though, don't you understand that one of the key reasons for the popularity of Linux is that every necessary and desirable piece of software for it can be freely downloaded and copied?
Buying software for Linux is like paying $40 for a web browser. No one is going to do it because everyone expects it to be free.
Why buy a game from a company you know may very well be gone and thus the game will never be patched or supported in a couple of months?
They're screwed. Get over it, move on. Other companies like Tribsoft are coming in. Loki aren't needed.
amen, every now and then someone on slashdot actually makes a good post with real logic and the right kind of attitude. Thank you for actually being sensible and reasonable, and for understanding the real reason why linux is falling.
you sir, are a fucking idiot.
...and this is Loki's fault?
Think about it this way. I have a company that makes Windows games. I need to recoup my Windows development costs. I want to make sure that I have as little competition with my Windows sales as possible, so the last thing I want to do is cannibalize them with simultaneous offerings from other, potentially hotter, ports.
Not too many Mac gamers are Windows gamers (and vice-versa). But Linux users are, almost by definition, Windows cannibals, and hence, potential cannibals for my Windows sales targets.
All Loki can do is ask to port the games; they cannot really leverage permission from the Windows developers...
In this market situation of Windows sales first, they are always going to be behind the 8-ball.
The Mac cult has a pretty loyal following willing to spend money. Its market share is bigger, too. It is easier to justify a port to the MacOS because you can more reliably map the (perceived) percentage of Windows sales onto the Mac market more than you can the Linux market.
This sucks.
I recently got RH7.1, and the demos of SMAC and SimCity3000 are awesome. Especially running them in a window, which you can't do on Windows...
That's fine if you just want a legal copy of the game at the lowest possible price, but buying from a liquidator is not doing Loki any favors.
