Linux 10th Anniversary Celebration Report

Marc MERLIN wrote to us with his follow-up report on the Linux 10 celebration in Silicon Valley. Marc comments "The event was a great success, several hundred people showed up, and the money left over is going to the EFF." Marc, in addition to being a great guy, also has lots of reports from other shows.

    Bent on taking over the billion dollar Desktop OS Market from industry giant and public pariah Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), the Linux movement celebrated it's 10th year of anti-corporate warfare and paradigm-shifting muscle by getting these guys to cook some burgers.

      Ever noticed that right after the fall of the iron curtain a Mc Donalds open up in Moscow ?

      These open source guys might seem naive, but they have a rather wicked and plotting mind.

    The event was a great success, the park people were impressed and said that we "really had our shit together". . .

    Judging by the pictures this whole thing didn't look that organized to me.. It looked like it was held in some baseball field with a few tents put up so the "Burgers got cooked but the chefs didn't." It seemed like it was a bunch of Linux junkies getting together and having a fun time eating and doing their own thing (and hey, what's wrong with that? :P)

      Damn. I'd thought I'd seen it all. You can't even run a story about a fricking BBQ on Slashdot without someone trying to one up the writers. I suppose I should chime in to run this mother into the ground.

      The park people said they "really had their shit together". No where in that comment does it say anything about how organzied the operation was. It said they "had their shit together". You inferred that this meant that it was a particularly organized event, but it didn't. It meant they "really had their shit together" just like it said.

      Having one's shit together, to me, means that someone has meat, someone has buns, there's a place for garbage, there's a method to get food, there's coolers filled with beverages, and someone seems to know what's happening. It doesn't necessarily mean that this is an efficient, organized troop of BBQ commandoes dispersing from a truck in swat-like fashion to commence operation: cook-out.

      It was a freakin' BBQ, how organized would you expect it to be?

    I was wondering why there were so many lame stories on the front page today. I just checked, and (at least on my homepage) there are no CT stories. So hemos, timothy, michael must be 'overworked' and are just randomly allowing stories.

    Now, here's the bad thing: I bet CT is somewhere helping to 'fix' the slashcode. God help us all.

    Wish I could moderate ya up...

    I don't think linux will catch up to microsoft in use. I also don't really want that. The way I see it the only way linux will catch up is if they make themselves "dumb" enough for almost everyone to use. Unless everything is point, click, and forget most people will not use it.

    I believe the average user does not want to open a user manual, read any instructions, or have any extra steps to follow. They want to plug it in, have it install itself, configure itself and then give a pretty picture. In a perfect world this is fine, but for anyone who works with these blasted machines they realize that when you go with an out of the box configuration it may not be what you want. It may not even function. In the MS world there is always a wizard or a dilogue box to look at, but it may not be what you need. I love the freedom that an open OS provides. I love the fact that If I want to change something I can hit Google and 90% of the time I have an answer within minutes.

    I think the day that linux goes towards the microsoft dumb is good idea they willl lose their appeal. So to answer your question I don't know, but I hope to hell they haven't.

      Don't forget, Linux the Operating System is seperate than the user interface that you use with it. One could have a dumbed down UI for the typical Windows user, and still have Linux. Unlike Windows NT, where the user interface is intertwined with the kernel so completly that the two are inseperatable, Linux and Unix keey the UI at arms-length. So much so, that differing versions of Linux and Unix can share the same UI (KDE, Gnome and Bash for example.)

    Several hundred people, you say? Why are there several photos of just a few people at a time in a huge empty field?

    And with the left over food that can fill up a truck bed, they must not have been very hungry.

      I must admit, I agree with you. My girlfriend and I were there from 10:45am to about 3pm. We estimated about 100 people, possibly 200. The parking lot was about half full. That being said, there are probably a few factors: people were encouraged to take public transportation; the park was huge and they didn't keep us in cages, so people roamed about. They definetly planned on having a massive amount of people show up after the big headlines, however it seems to me that most people bloew it off. It was a good time though and I consider my donation well spent.

    There's an article over on Yahoo! that gives a good summary of Linux and its position in the computer industry. Yes, it's written by Reuters for J. Random Consumer, but it's pretty accurate. It also talks about strengths and weaknesses, Linux-based companies going bust, and where Linux might find its niche.

    We had a great time at our Linux10 celebration here in Manila, Philippines. Quite a few mini-talks on various topics. It was so much fun to meet other geeks, and there were plenty of newbies to brainwa... indoctrina... _help_, yeah, that's it.

    My mom even attended the StarOffice talk! Way coooool. =)
