Great Bridge Out; Caldera in Trouble

tim_maroney writes: "CNET's news.com gives us a pair of open source disaster movies today. Great Bridge, an open source database maker which refused a bid from Red Hat earlier this year, will lay off 38 of 41 employees and close its doors. Caldera, a seller of Linux and UNIX versions, announced layoffs, plummeting revenues, and a reverse stock split intended to allow it to be relisted. Not a happy day for fans of open source business models."

    From your diary:

"Right, I was going to make this journal entry 0 but that looks too much like I'm trying to be a geek so this is entry 1.

Now it looks like I'm trying not to look like a newbie; in fact it now sounds like I'm really concerned about my image. I'll now terminate this line of thought.

Perhaps I'll find something sensible to say here at a later date. Just now I'm going to digest my newly-eaten breakfast :-)"

Anyone else notice that nerds can't write interesting diary entries? I chalk this up to poor self-esteem, boring lives and no imagination. They all want to pretend that they are interesting people, so they can't write about their life of sitting in front of the monitor looking at porn and listening to stolen music. They've destroyed every ounce of creativity they may have had by playing quake and watching stupid geek TV shows like buffy the vampire slayer, and their self esteem is non-existant from getting all those wedgies in high school.

I'd like to thank taco for implementing diaries, as this brought home the personal problems of the geek community in an irrefutable example of complete failure to be interesting as people.

IBM, if they could help it, would move entirely to an open-source model.

Oh my Gawd, please tell me you're not really that naive.

at the end of the day they still make their money by selling proprietery software, just like Microsoft.
