Charting Virtual Worlds

Myrioandme writes "Since the inception of the Internet, cybergeographers have been trying to draw maps of cyberspace. The results have been mixed, but a new book brings together some of the most interesting -- and breathtaking -- maps of virtual worlds. Wired is carrying the full story."

You missed the point goober. Apparently you don't grasp higher concepts very well. The author implied that as a Mercator projection map was eventually settled on as a good global map style, so hopefully someone will design a good mapping system for the Internet.

A profound lesson for the living. First Stage:Denial and Isolation When we hear of terminal illness we react with the statement,"No not me, it cannot be true." This initial denial is true for patients who were told outright at the beginning of their illness denial, at least partial denial,is used by almost all patients, not only during the first stages of illness or following confrontation, but also later on from time to time. Denial acts as a buffer after unexpected shocking news and allows the person to collect himself. Still, this does not mean, however, that the patient later on will be willing,or even happy and relieved if he can sit and talk with someone about his impending death.I can remember when one of my closest friends was faced with his long term illness before his death,He was ready to face it until he became so ill.He terminated the idea of relief while waiting to die.He could no longer face the facts and resumed his previous denial. I favored talking about death and dying with his family and himself. I feel comfortable if the patient indicates that they want to talk about it. My friend became frightened by on coming death but as his illness grew worse he was defenseless and relied on family and friends. I think denial usually is a temporary defense and will soon be replaced by partial acceptance.I feel denial exists in every patient at times, at the very beginning of a serious illness more so than toward the end of life.My friend had supportive friends and family who contributed to his well being. We allowed him to deny as much as was necessary for his survival and remained available to him during his whole hospitalization. Towards the end it became a personal matter (his denial), a feeling of sharing a foreign language with someone who was unable to communicate with others.I felt anger when we took on the role of comforting visitor when hospital staff should have been more helpful in this role for such a pathetic patient. Although we were never rejected by my friend, but we supported his denial.I feel if we are willing to take an honest look at ourselves,it can help us in our own growth and maturity.Second Stage: Anger While confronted with the first stage of denial the family of my dying friend became replaced by feelings of anger, rage, envy, and resentment. The logical questions became "Why me?"I imagine anybody in the position of facing long term illness would ask the questions: Why couldn't it have been me? From observing the family and friends of the patient the stage of denial is in contrast of the anger stage. It is diffcult to cope. I believe the reason for this is the felt in all directions and projected onto the environment at times almost at random. The family became angry with the doctors saying they were no good, they don't know what test to require and what diet to prescribe. The nurses are even more often a target of their anger. Whatever they touch is not right. It seems every moment they leave the room the bell rings. The light is on the very minute they start their report for the next shift of nurses. The issues addressed in the book I read, Dr.Elisabeth Ross's On Death and Dying gave examples of a dying patients anger. From my experience with my friends family I was feeling somewhat angry because within and outside the hospital my friends behavior became intolerable the more in capacitated he became. The family complained all the more as he became a management problem especially for the nursing staff. My friends sister would stand in front of the nurses desk and demand attention for her brother, which the nurses resented as interference and inappropriate behavior. I understood this anger and the author's view point of the second stage:Anger.According to Dr.Elisabeth K. Ross on this anger stage,My friend sister was allowed to ventilate some of her rage.Once, she was able to relieve the burden, she was able to show another side of her, namely one of a warm women capable of love, and affection. Before her brother death she had found some peace if not acceptance and her brother was sent home, where he died soon thereafter. Many remember him, and we talk constantly about him, one of the attributes while coping his death. The Third Stage:Bargaining According to Dr.Elisabeth K.Ross, the third stage of bargaining,is less well known but equally helpful to the patient, though only for brief periods of time. My friend was terminally ill, yet he knew there was a slim chance of being wishful of another chance. He may have wished of an extension of life or a few days without pain or physical discomfort but realize this was impossible. He sung around the country for a living but soon realized his life was unfolding. Bargaining is an attempt to postpone, it has to include a prize offered"for good behavior",it also sets a self-imposed "deadline" and it includes an implicit promise that the patient will not ask for more if this one postponement is granted. In the case of my friend I feel joy in knowing he associated bargaining pschologically with a quiet gentle guilt towards the end of his death the acceptance only enforced further bargaining and more unkept promises when the deadline was past
