DIY: Building A Wireless Freenet

techmuse writes: "Moshe Bar has an excellent article at Byte describing how he designed a wireless freenet for his community, and convinced his neighbors to participate. Most importantly, the freenet has resulted in new forms of interaction and strengthened social ties within his own local community (the inverse of what happens on the wider Internet)." And since consumer-grade wireless access points are now cheaper than a large hard drive, this sort of guide is especially welcome.

Funny, they don't seem to mention all the other Windows based Web Hosting or Internet companies going out of business, the Windows driven DSL companies going out of business, or RedHat, one of the largest supporters of Linux, actually turning a profit when all other companies including IBM were losing money. But yeah those obscure companies they mention that just so happened to use Open Source software in their business, yeah it's the software's fault, not bad management.

I don't think Moshe claimed Open Source was at fault...along similar lines (from the article):

      > VA Linux's stock has been on a downward spiral
      > for quite some time and is now at around $1
      > with a market cap of around $59 million.

That's because their hardware designs included power supplies that remained on and overheated, melting (seriously) the cases. Also featured DOA servers. They had the Linux market and blew it.

If a company stock trades at below $1 for a some period it will be de-listed from the NASDAQ (market capitalization is another of a series of requirements). Companies such as VA Linux are fighting to stay listed. VA Linux's stock has been on a downward spiral for quite some time and is now at around $1

Is this the model of government that the US is so fond of promoting throughout the world?
