Who Has Faster Pipes? Linux, Win2000, WinXP Compared

SeaBait writes: "This revealing article about the High-performance programming techniques on Linux and Windows shows that Linux rules. The performance testing was on Pipes(interprocess communication mechanism available on both Windows and Linux and UNIX). Although I new Linux would fare the best, the poor performance of Windows XP was a surprise. Windows 2000 actually did better than XP!"

I go to a very old University, and the building I live in is, itself, over 100 years old. When a friend of mine from down the hall went home for Christmas break, a girl she went to high school with warned her that she had contacted a spirit on her Ouija board, of a male student who had committed suicide in our building in the 1940's. We haven't yet been able to determine whether this actually happened, but I never put too much faith in Ouija boards, so I didn't think much of it. I live in the very top floor of this building, and the room across from mine is unoccupied. It is the largest, and most beautiful room in the building, with the best lighting and lots of windows, but it is only used for storage. One day, as I was leaving my room, I would swear to hearing eerie Latin choral music coming from inside that room, but at the time, I figured that I was just imagining things, and ignored it. Since yesterday, I am pretty convinced that I have a spirit of some kind hanging around my room. Why it has reached out to me, I'm not sure. Fortunately, I don't believe this spirit to be evil, as nothing destructive has yet been done. Still, the things that happened yesterday have me convinced that there is something, or someone, else present here, other than myself. Yesterday I checked my e-mail, then logged out and laid down to take a nap. After a few minutes I heard a beep, exactly like that kind that sounds when I'm logged on, and I got a new e-mail message. A few minutes later, I heard another, but, since I clearly remembered logging out, I assumed I was just tired and hearing things. When I got up about an hour later, I checked my mail again, and I had two new messages. I noticed right away that both messages had arrived just after I had laid down for my nap. Putting it up to coincidence, I gathered my things together and headed off to class, locking my door behind me. When class got out, I headed back to my room, and noticed that my door was slightly open. Since I live alone, this scared the living crap out of me. I slowly peeked in the door, and saw my neighbor sitting at my computer, using my e-mail. She heard me come in and jumped about a mile high, then questioned where I'd been. I told her that I'd been in class for the last two hours, and asked her how she'd gotten into my room. She told me that she'd knocked on my door, and heard someone say "Come in!". Shetried the door and, finding it unlocked, let herself in. She was pretty freaked out when I wasn't in the room.... she even checked under my bed and in my closet to see if I was hiding. She figured that she was just hearing things and that I'd run downstairs for a few minutes, leaving my door unlocked, so she sat down and checked her mail, etc. When I got back from class, about 10 minutes later, she told me about the voice, and I explained to her that I had locked my door before I left. Perhaps it's all coincidental, and she just thought she heard something, and I left my door unlocked, thinking I had locked it, but I'm not so sure. There have been a few too many coincidences for me to swallow. I hope that if I do have a ghost, that it's a friendly ghost, and we can get along. I have nothing against them, and hopefully it has nothing against me. And, I figure that, if the ghost wants someone in my room, that's okay with me... as long as nothing gets stolen or whatever. It's still all retty weird, though.

Why are you being so rude? Anyway, here's another one.

It was 6/1/96 and my friend and I were using a ouiga board and we were trying to contact spirits.

I never believed in the board, so we started questioning it.

The board started to answer questions and claimed it was St. Francis and we asked it for a sign. St. Francis said that he would appear to us in the room.

It told us to look in the mirror on the wall. After doing so we did not see anything.

The board then told us to look harder and the second time we looked in the mirror I noticed on the wall behind me was a picture of St. Francis hanging on the wall. I knew then that the board worked.

The ghost experience I had was very spooky.

I am an Israeli. One week ago I printed a ghost story. While reading it I used an electronic English - Hebrew dictionary. It should have been rare for me to meet a word I didn't understand. And suddenly I met a word I didn't understand.

I turned on the dictionary and looked for the word . After I got the definition for the word I turned off the dictionary. After I read few lines more I met another word that I didn't understand. So when I came to turn on the dictionary I saw it was already turned on and on the screen appeared the last word I tried to find ( I can't remember the word ). I am 100 percent sure I turned it off.

I didn't pay attention to this and started to looking for the new word. I pushed the 'clear' button in vain to knock a new word. When I pushed the button the word was erased and instead of a clear screen appeared the word "GHOST".

It was as if the ghost came out from the printed paper. I tried to push the 'clear' button again to erase the word but it didn't vanish. Only after I turned the dictionary on and off twice the word vanished. I don't have an explanation for this event but I wish it won't happen to me or to anybody else again.
