Intel Promises A Cool Billion (Transistors)

NevDull writes: "CNN is reporting that Intel has announced new semiconductor packaging which will lead to CPUs with a billion transistors running at 20GHz within 6 years. Yummy!" The advance here is removing the balls of solder between the chip's packaging and the microprocessor core, which leaves room for more transistors (or a thinner package). Like it says, though, this is years away from your pocket Cray.

      Yeah, he should be the guy who writes the funny episodes on star trek. Then the people on the Enterprise could make SETI@Home jokes all the time. They could talk about how their computers processed some signal and found the Vulcans. It would be leet! And very funny. Cuz Vulcans are funny and they could discover vulcans and make first contact. And then they would say "Oh wait we already know about Vulcans. Ooops" And it would be very funny. HAHAHAHAHA!
