Goldin to Retire from NASA

nervesmiffs writes: "Lots of people hated him. I believe he has been one of the truly great leaders of our time. He has completely turned NASA around during his 10 year tenure. Here's the retirement story." So if you were NASA's next director, what would you do with the agency? Men on Mars? Probes on Europa? Trans-warp drives?

They say that Gregg's spokesman, Brian Hart, has said: 'We are not working on an encryption bill and have no intention to.'" As Rob Carlson is quoted at the article's close, though: "(Gregg) said he was definitely supporting it. Now he says he's definitely not. Maybe he'll say he's definitely supporting it again."

Well, check out this blurb: 'Due to the Microsoft anti-spam initiative, customers are restricted to use their mail services. Therefore, POP3 service is only available when using MSN Explorer, Microsoft Outlook, or Microsoft Outlook Express.'" Awesome. ALICE Takes Medal At AI Competition

jeffy124 writes: "The Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity (ALICE) has won the bronze and the top marks at the Loebner AI Challenge, a competition based on the Turing test. Silver and gold remain unawarded as silver requires convincing half the judges the AI program is a human, and the gold requires speech interaction rather than text. ALICE repeated as this year's bronze by scoring best among all the entries. She failed to convince half the judges she was human, so she has to stick to bronze. The event took place last Saturday at the London Science Museum."

    IBM Patents Web Page Templates

jalefkowit writes: "More follies from the US Patent
& Trademark Office ... now IBM has been awarded US Patent #6,304,886 for software that automatically "generates [a] customized Web site without the Web site creator writing any HTML or other programming code", based on "a plurality of pre-stored templates, comprising HTML formatting code, text, fields, and formulas" that are then customized through the process of asking the user a few questions. In other words, they've patented the ubiquitous wizards found in FrontPage and other newbie-oriented HTML editors. This was submitted to the USPTO on June 19, 1998 -- surely someone out there knows of prior art for this?"

    Book Reviews
In 1991, future coverstar Linus Torvalds released a little kernel which has ended up working in synchrony with GNU utilities and various other software projects to live happily on millions of computers worldwide. Read about the beginnings of the Linux kernel peppered with anecdotes about growing up Finnish, straight from the horse's mouth, with Linus's book Just For Fun, coauthored by David Diamond. This makes a lighthearted companion piece to the slighly-more-serious effort from Pekka Himanen, The Hacker Ethic.
On the (wacky, speculative) Science Fiction front, you may enjoy Hemos' reviews of Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Terry Pratchett's Thief of Time.

And for your more serious moments, we've run reviews lately of the sobering Hack Attacks Revealed and the very informative Digital Copyright by noted authority in the field Jessica Litman. There's also the hard-to-categorize work from Ian Stewart called Flatterland, a modern update to the classic Flatland.
