E-commerce with mod_perl and Apache
rob_99 writes: "Cool new mod_perl article at perl.com documents building a large scale ecommerce solution w/ mod_perl & apache!" Pretty cool stuff - it's kind of funny to think how ephemeral their work turned out to be.
This early post for Ida!
Interesting to since what was nappening behind the scenes away from the marketroids.

Message broadcast 24/7 from Commando 1 over Afghanistan:
"Attention Taliban, you are condemned. Did you know that?
The instant the terrorists you support took over our
planes, you sentenced yourselves to death. The Armed Forces
of the United States are here to seek justice for our dead,"
one translated message said. "Our helicopters will rain fire
down upon your camps before you detect them on your radar.
Our bombs are so accurate we can drop them right through your
windows."
DONT TREAD ON ME
Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail
once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
never begins it, never, but once engaged...
never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage
so be it
threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war
so be it
settle the score
touch me again for the words that you'll hear evermore...
love it or live it, she with the deadly bite
quick is the blue tongue, forked as lighting strike
shining with brightness, always on surveillance
the eyes, they never close, emblem of vigilance
METALLICA, RIDE THE LIGHTNING
The worst terrorist attack in recorded history occurred last month, and now we're involved in a WAR and you people have the gall to be discussing building a large scale ecommerce solution w/ mod_perl & apache???? My *god*, people, GET SOME PRIORITIES!
The bodies of the thousands of innocent civilians who died (and will die) in these unprecedented events could give a good god damn about building a large scale ecommerce solution w/ mod_perl & apache, your childish Lego models, your nerf toy guns and whining about the lack of a "fun" workplace, your Everquest/Diablo/D&D fixation, the latest Cowboy Bebop rerun, or any of the other ways you are "getting on with your life" (here's a hint: watching Cowboy Bebop in your jammies and eating a bowl of Shreddies is *not* "getting on with your life"). The souls of the victims are watching in horror as you people squander your finite, precious time on this earth playing video games!
You people disgust me!
...that they used MySQL.
I am a great LOVER of GOATS!
But dear god man, what happened to the toys?!?
Is it anything like cockware?
I too was an eToys employee and the fact that babycenter lives on is no testament to java's superiority, or lack thereof.
In fact, eToys' demise had nothing to do with the technology used. Bad press, spiralling dotcom confidence, burn rate envied by the biggest brush fires all had more of a fatal impact.
If anything, I'd say that because the site was so stable and scalable, the technology used kept the company alive as long as it it did.
Had etoys.com site gone down as fast, as often and as furious as the toysrus.com site did, it would have disintegrated before the 2000 Christmas season even got started!
java, mod_perl, etc, etc are only as solid/scalable as the team developing on it. eToys had a world-class development team.
I wish I could say the same for styleclick.com, who used java/tomcat/Inprise!
