Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Environment?

brad-d queries: "My company is seriously considering enforcing a SOE on all employee computers, including developers. The level of lock-down would likely include baring the Windows registry from changes (and in effect stopping the installation of new software). The goals of this SOE are to prevent users from installing unlicensed software, plus some support issues. What are others experiences with situations like this? Can a developer really work in a lock-down environment? What compromises could be made between developers and IT services? And no, Linux would be likely banned." It depends on how "locked-down" said environment is, and what the developer would be will be working on, however if the Registry is locked with no mechanism provided for the Developer to add in whatever keys are necessary, how much real developing can one do?

And what college was this? Given the abundance of mis-spelled words and grammatical errors in your illuminating dissertation, I'd suspect that it's probably not an accredited school. Let me guess: Jimmy-Joe's Skool of Hair Dressing and Monster Truck Rallies.

    Mis-spellings:

    experence
    colege
    hassel
    bairly
    savy
    intence
    themself
    compleatly
    lossen
    softwair
    actaully
    beleave
    easer
    sience
    dont

And don't give me any crap about "spelling isn't important," or "who cares about grammer?" or even "English isn't my native language." Some grammar mistake are acceptable, as are some mis-spellings, but this is just ridiculous (not 'rediculous').

There's this novel invention that anyone can purchase for just a few dollars at practically any bookstore. It's called a 'dictionary'. It contains definitions of words, and can even help you figure out the proper spellings.

There also exists this crazy computer application called a 'spellchecker'. It's not perfect, but it would have caught all of your gross mis-spellings.

1)Pick a name like Starship_trooper. A movie rated among the worst in history. Only someone yearning for attention, or hmm.. a troll would do that.

2)Make a coherent argument that goes against the grain of most readers. Conveniently stretch the point, pretending to ignore that the poster was talking about developers. Finish off with calling developers users. Nice hidden insult. Extra bonus for being modded up. Proves that troll can outsmart /. moderators. Good tollkiddie. Still a luser.

    3) Let's see - IS director just discovers slashdot, signs up and posts his first message.

5)And for an 100% newbie, even has intimate knowledge about certain goats, and has links to such goat sites. Right.

A clever troll you are. And it doesn't metter if you're right or wrong. Smells, walks, looks, talks like a troll. Gnat.

Or, it could be named after Heinlein's decent novel from which the terrible movie came, or, judging from my e-mail address, the name of an excellent song by Yes, which you should hear at least once in your lifetime. (The song has _nothing_ to do with the novel or movie, save the title)

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that all posts which don't ascribe to Slashdot groupthink are trolls. Just like all people who say things that don't agree with the U.S. government are terrorists. Right.
