Bush Wants an Unhackable Private Network

Slur points out an article at the New York Times which says that the "Bush administration is considering the creation of a secure new government communications network separate from the Internet that would be less vulnerable to attack and efforts to disrupt critical federal activities," writing "It seems to me money would be better spent getting the next-generation Internet going, for the government to fund more of the existing research and standards boards to create protocols that are invulnerable to the kinds of attacks the government seems to fear, namely massive DOS attacks. Or is there something else a 'net terrorist' could do to 'disrupt the vital flow of information'?" Isn't hard-to-disrupt communication the reason that DARPA got involved in this "Internet" business anyhow? Update: 11/19 22:48 GMT by T : This was mentioned before a little while ago when USA Today wrote about the same concept, but apparently a Digital Pearl Harbor is still being flogged.

Like Bush even understands what a network is, let alone being able to wrap his pawltry grey matter around the concept of "Unhackable"

Slashdot - A critical viewpoint. Slashdot is a good website and attracts many, many readers and contributors from around the globe. With that readership comes a diversity of background, skills and opinion. This serves as a catalyst for healthy debate and the sharing of knowledge. Slashdot does contain some wonderful information and intelligent, insightful comments. These (in the main) are written by professionals and academics in the fields of physics, mathematics, electronics, engineering and computer science. The majority of highly moderated posts are made by people with a detailed and intricate knowledge of their chosen field, or by those with a interesting angle on a subject or event. Unfortunately, Slashdot is also home to many "wannabees". Forgetting the obligatory flame baiting and offensive remarks from "trolls", the real issue for me is the people who think themselves to be a divine gift to the world. This ranges from school kids all the way up to seemingly mature people who think themselves to be the ultimate authority just because they have recently finished reading a book or taking a certain class. We have seen "supposed" NASAprogrammers make comments which would be more suited coming from my cat. And then there's your "Just got out of university and now reckon they know everything" type. Here's a few examples: The Porting Wannabee Example - Microsoft XBox. Typical wannabee comment "Come on people! It's so easy to port Linux to this puppy! I've been waiting four days already". This sort of comment is what winds me up. These people are the leeches of this world, never contributing and always complaining. This is not about bashing Linux. Or any of the BSD variants. Or even Microsoft. What crows me is the utter contempt that wannabees have for the time, money and effort that genuinely intelligent people put into hacking/coding/modifications. They then take that work, and then moan about it not being complete or fully working. The Programming Wannabee Example - Choice of programming language. Typical wannabee comment "Yeah, I just Finished a class in xxx and my professor said I should use it for yyyyy. I can't believe you are using zzzzz. I've been programming in this language for bbbb months". Grrrrrrr. The incompetence, lack of knowledge and downright idiocy of some of these posts gets under my skin. The Open Source Zealot (No offence to you true OSS people) Example - Windows XP on sale. Typical wannabee comment "I can't believe anyone would buy this. I mean come on guys who needs to give Bill more money! Anyone can write a perl script! etc etc blah blah blah".This is the worst. Usually younger folk, they harp on about the benefits of open source this that and the other probably without EVER having installed Linux/FreeBSD etc The only reason they are at the site and posting is to make themselves feel part of the community. Claims of hacking/porting/personal projects are usually wildly inaccurate and highly sceptical This little piece was born out of my total dislike of posters lacking grip on their personal realities. I'm not a formally educated software engineer or computer scientist, nor will I ever claim to know xyz about a language or operating system which I do not know very well, but I'm not ashamed to admit that. The problem is the people who fool themselves and try to persuade other people that they are more than they are. I am braced for a barrage of abuse regarding people's freedom to be assholes, right to pretend and talk total crap. I'll be told that everyone has the right to post even if it's totally wrong and be modded down and that's what the moderation system is there for etc etc. But god damn - Who really cares if IceCoolMrManGotaCoolHandle reckons that putting Linux into a microwave is easy. He/She/It should spend more time coding (or learning) than boasting. Flame away.
