Steven Schafer On The Future of Progeny
Eugenia writes: "Last month Progeny Linux Systems ceased development on their own distribution in order to focus on selling professional services. In their announcement, the company cited the prohibitive cost of developing and publishing a distro. This move marked another firm in the wave of tech companies, Linux and otherwise, making significant changes to adjust to the market slump. Progeny's distribution was based on Debian GNU/Linux, and many in the Linux community were closely watching the company because it was founded by Debian creator Ian Murdock. OSNews spoke to the President of Progeny Linux Systems, Michael Schafer, once the dust had settled on his company's announcement."
Any distribution that puts GNU on the front of Linux should be boycotted.
Personally, I will NEVER EVER refer to Linux as that bastardization that RMS wants. NEVER.
That is so lame.
The Debian installer is easy, as long as you know your hardware.
Bullshit.
My background: I admin several (>30) Linux boxes. I run Linux on my work machine, and on my home machines. I've been doing this for 5 years. Slackware is my distro of choice, because it is easy to install (I can do a complete slack install in under an hour), although I've tried quite a few other distros (including Mandrake, Caldera, Redhat, Turbolinux, and others.)
I tried installing Debian once, and gave up, as the installer is so bad, that it was impossible to tell what the hell was going on. (Hmm, I select something, or at least I THINK I select something, but there is no feedback telling me that it's selected, so I really don't know.)
"knowing your hardware" has nothing to do with it, the design is just piss-poor. It's even worse than Windows.
