Galeon 1.0 Released
exceed writes: "Finally, after about a year, version one of Galeon -- the GTK+ web browser based on Mozilla's rendering engine, gecko -- has been released. If you plan on installing this for the first time, you might want to read the 'INSTALL' files included within the package for requirements. Head on over to the project's file list at Sourceforge."
It is not good to see that there are more and free browsers based on mozillas rendering engine.
The marketshare of open source browsers get more and more splitted up between different programs.
This makes it very difficult to establish new standard because there will be only little compatibility.
In fact this helps in the long term microsoft very much, because people get confused with this many open source browsers and in the end choose the microsoft explorer giving microsoft more and more power over the internet.
Additionally a larger number of browsers create more possibilities for security holes, so that security will be worse than microsofts.
The open source review mechanism will not apply because there are too many browsers, so that not all will be reviewed for security holes sufficiently.

A huge security hole has already been discovered in version 1.0. It is possible for a malicious website to corrupt data on your harddrive. A fix should be out shortly.
However version 0.12.8 does not seem to be affected by this bug. If you are interested in trying Galeon i would reccomend you download this version for now.
Yes, JonKatz, it is porn friendly. You can look at all the little boy pornography you want!

If more people were like you we wouldn't have 3D graphics, hard drives in GB range or 1+ GHz CPUs.
