Oldest IRC Server Going Offline

Matty_ writes: "Looks like the oldest IRC server in continued operation on the Internet is going to be turned off for good. According to the server's MOTD, the server will be shut off no later than January 1. Aparently the University of Colorado can no longer support the software and hardware, as well as provide the network resources, specifically the extra bandwidth required for the various DoS (Denial of Service) attacks from which EFnet servers still suffer. They chose not to accept the liability and decided to retire the server."

IRC is home to the largest collection of lamers in the world. It's home to people that do nothing but try to express their sexual virility and looking for porn. But...its fun. IRC is great. I know lots of cool people on IRC, and its going to be morons like flooders, advertisers, etc, etc that ruin it for everyone else. They should be sued.

Oh, whither IRC? Not only whither, but where? The last time I tried to get on efnet (almost exactly a year ago), I had to send out an email asking friends/aquaintances what server to use. My ordered-by-west-coast-goodness server list from back in the day (according to my comment in it, the last time I updated it was late '94) was completely inoperable. Damn!

I can really understand the exhaustion w/ efnet. I quit using it because we had to go to such lengths just to defend our chanels from "hackers". And for godsakes, a couple of 'em were formal democracies in organization! It's sort of like a world wherein a total lack of a life (*cough* scriptkiddies *cough*) can cause a small tactical nuclear weapon to materizlize in someone's lap -- it just doesn't leave much room for communities.

    Oh, and by the way:

They r not vandals, just young people having "fun"

For having has the pleasure to "observe" some of them in action, effectivly they are just a bragging bunch that still didn't discover Beer and Girls...

BUT among them are some keen minds. some guys I wouldn't like to meet after their Comp CS, at least not on the wrong side of a DoS...

But then, it has always been so. And it'll give us competition in the coming years... Well, maybe I'll have to readapt that ol'Doom (You know, the one with process as monster, and to kill a process you killed the corresponding monster) and put a specific attack to each weapon, and maybe a good sniffer/tracker to play radar...

If on my own turf, I should be on the winning side 8)
