Ximian for HP-UX

PenguinX writes: "It seems that the folks out at Ximian and HP have delivered on the promise to make Ximian Gnome (1.2) for HP-UX." Another nail in the CDE coffin ;)

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but besides geeks who aqquire HP-UX machines via ebay and dumpsters, who wouls use ximian gnome. Perhaps its imply becasue I've never even seen an HP-UX in my life, but I would assume that Solaris/Sun is the defacto standard for commercial unix desktops.

      Answer. This just helps HP-UX system administrators goof off. :-) I actually like the HPUX Visualize workstations, they kick ass as far as the hardware is concerned. I roast comparable ultra5 workstations on a regular basis, running benchmarks on the code I'm fiddling with. Hell yeah, I wouldn't mind one of those running GNU tools instead of a puny x86 linux box. In fact, I used to work at HP and a couple days before I left I saw a guy in the lab boot an hp9000 using the linux kernel to bash. It was pretty neat. Though I'm not sure if there are PIX drivers yet to run X.

      I actually used it as my first Unix, not long ago. It drove me nuts when they switched to CDE (common desktop environment) because stuff just looked and worked wrong...

      There's not just one Unix platform. Maybe a high percentage use Sun, but that doesn't mean HPs have no advantages. Sometimes they're more appropriate and people buy them. Sometimes they're not.

      I didn't say nobody used HP-UX, I just questioned a exactly how many people used HP-UX and b how many of those would pay for ximian.

      HP-UX users won't be paying for Ximian directly, just as they don't pay for CDE directly. It will come as part of the OS.

      I run Linux 2.4.16 on my 4-proc HP9000/K410. Runs rather well too.

      When will I get Ximian gnome for hppa-linux? Not that I even bothered to install X on that machine.

      Actually, HP is very widely used in engineering, and that's a very large % of all *NIX boxes in use. CDE is just too comlicated to average users whom in many cases don't even know *NIX. Sure Gnome will be a nice addon for them. I'm downloading it right now, I'll see how they like it :)

      What Visualize machine are you talking about that would be comprable to an Ultra 5? I haven't seen a Visualize machine costing less than 3 times as much as an Ultra 5.

    Back when I had to use those HP-UX machines, CDE offered much more than any free alternative (err... were there any?), but today, I'd really like a modern Gnome (or KDE, which I prefer) on those thingies. It doesn't take anything away, and it will surely put some pressure on CDE - so more power to them!

    Isn't the current version of Ximain Gnome at 1.4? Does this mean that they had problems with Nautilus on HP-UX and just decided to use GMC and call it 1.2? Maybe this helps explain the CDE compatible mode that you can select when running the Ximian setup program for the first time.

      HP-UX has a very conservative development plan and HP wanted the most stable branch of the software. They weren't willing to take a bet on 1.4, which wasn't ready when they committed to GNOME. So, they went with 1.2. My guess is, they'll go to 1.4 before they go on to 2.0.

      That's the nature of big commercial UNIX OS's though-- very conservative customers who prize stability over all else.

      From the release summary:

      "We are not planning any product updates to Ximian GNOME 1.2. During 2002, we plan to release Ximian GNOME 1.4 for HP-UX, with limited support available from HP."

    completely dead environment.. well not yet but thats what it looks like is happening to it.

    I'm kinda glad, as UNIX needs a new face. It is interesting that Ximian / Gnome is the one that it is getting rather than kde. Both HP and Sun are kinda backing gnome. Interesting though

      I use CDE, and I happen to like it. I think it'd be great to see it open-sourced and available on Linux as an alternative, lightweight, integrated WM.

      I'll stop now so that everybody can finish laughing at me :(

      CDE is not dead at all. I use it day to day in a bunch of servers running HP/UX. Of course, time does move on, and they can't keep CDE forever. However, I think that they maybe should have included KDE as default.. it's just more *finished* than GNOME is.

      you obviously missed the "well not yet part of the comment".. the point it that cde is on its way out. if you want a free version of a WM like that on Linux try xfce.

    Ximian also launched their Red Carpet Express service today-- it's a high-bandwidth paid-subscription deal where you pay like 10 bucks a month and get faster downloads. I'm totally down with ponying up a little cash to be able to max out my cablemodem.

    Both the HP-UX release, and the Red Carpet Express launch are good news for Ximian in terms of real dollars rolling in.

    I'm pretty excited about the Express thing-- it's a good opportunity to support a company that does great stuff for the community.

      Silly Ximian. When will companies learn? selling software for linux doesn't work. (yes, I know red-carpet isn't linux specific, but most people who use it are linux'rs, or bsd'rs, which the same applies).

      I'll make one prediciton tho. In one (1) year, Ximian will port most of it's software to windows. Targetting the biggest target groups with non-specific software like Evolution and red-carpet is a much better buisness plan. And that means windows or bust.
