McOwen Case Settled
ewilts writes: "Back in July, you ran a story about David McOwen, a computer adminstrator at DeKalb Technical College in Georgia, who was being charged for installing SETI software on school computers. This case has now been settled. See also the EFF press release
on McOwen's web site." Update: 01/18 16:11 GMT by M : It was software from distributed.net, not SETI.

No doubt, you have seen the numerous posts that end up at -1 which talk about the moderation system of the Slashdot editors. These aren't just troll posts--people are genuinely trying to get you to pay attention to the fact that in that Oracle story, which is now off the front page and a few days old, a thread is STILL being bitchslapped, despite the best efforts of the community moderators to mark it up.
The Slashdot editors feel they know more than the community moderators. You may notice that the thread jumps up to +5, only to be brought down to -1 again in a matter of minutes. Basically, the Slashdot community feels it to be a relevant and interesting post, and the editors seem quite determined to counter any moderations the thread receives. They don't agree with what the community wants, apparently.
None of the Slashdot editors appears to have commented on this yet. It goes to show that the whole facade of a "community-based" site is quite different from reality.
The place to discuss this without fear of being marked down is at Kuro5hin. Go there.
OF COURSE this will be marked down as -1 Offtopic. But I feel it's worth it.
Your electronicintifada link makes me want to throw up. The palestinians are terrorists and they don't fool the american people anymore. You're either in league with these filthy fucking terrorists or you've been duped by them.
