Carmack: Lord of the Games

seer writes: "This article on Red Herring is a nice look at the interworkings of id software, most specifically their famous employee John Carmack. It delves deeply into the fact that id has stayed a very small company and dabbles with other topics such as Carmack's tendency to stay away from Microsoft 'standards' and the whole DooM ]I[ debacle. An interesting read."

Last time they did this we got Java. And look what it has done for our web browsing experience! Oh wait, you don't like lag?

Hm, last time I checked most of my web lag is from ad servers and aggressive Flash animations, not java applets.

Why do posts that say nothing except "java is slow" still get modded up? They should be (-1, Troll).

I, for one, am proud of them. However, you're totally wasting your time posting such information here among a group of people who go years between expeditions off the couch. Seriously, how many nerds -- especially Linux style pocket protector-wearing, truly loserish nerds -- who aren't at least fifty pounds overweight?

There's a reason why they defend and revere stupid video games; the endless stream of "revolutionary" shoot-em-up games, all exactly the same, is the closest these dorks come to physical exertion.

You don't know even half of the story, and you're only so quick to lambaste the guy because of Daikatana's failure.

John Romero left because of differences of opinion while developing Quake.

How about you shut the fuck up instead of posting, and show me the games you've developed. Then we'll talk.

It's not his own graphics technology, it's OpenGL, which is used by many programmers around the globe. And he doesn't do it because he wants to have portable code. That's a part of it, sure, but he uses OpenGL mainly because it's easier to code, which means less development time and less debugging time. Also, it allows for greater flexibility. Not to mention, with Direct3D, can we say, "namespace pollution"? I thought so.

    Bullshit. Moron. That is all.
