Australia Spying On Its Own

AVIDLY INTERESTED writes: "Well well, the Australian government has been caught out spying on its own citizens, despite denying for years that they do this type of thing. This story at The Age shows that the Defence Signals Directorate listens to just about every bit of communications in Australia. The interesting thing about this story is the background to it. In this case the govt spied because they were trying to win an election, and needed evidence to demonise a ship that was docking in Australia carrying a bunch of refugees. National security be damned, this is echelon for political gain. Is it happening anywhere else?"

You're living here and you've learnt nothing hehe.

I'm not a great dibber dobber, but dobbing in drug dealers and welfare cheats aint such a bad thing. Theres a fair go attitude here, not a you work, whilst I do nothing - even though there is plenty of that happening in Byron :)

Bike helmets? Sheesh, don't wear one then. I see plenty of people helmetless. Just give the cops a shot of whatever accent you can put on, and they'll let you off. But then again, you'd probably prefer to crack your skull open :)

Australia is the least likely country to go 1984.

The clear resentment of all Australians by the staff of Slashdot has no place anywhere on the Internet, let alone the fact that the story itself has little place on a site that claims a mantra of "news for nerds." As for "stuff that matters," I don't think that's the true reason for posting such material; I doubt timothy thought that he'd be doing the rest of the world a favour by posting about a political situation in Australia, from the viewpoint of an unknowledgable observer -OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY!- The racism displayed toward Australians as a whole on this site is appalling.
