Mozilla Development Roadmap Updated

yota writes: "The guys at mozilla.org just published an updated development roadmap with some interesting thoughts about what will happen after Mozilla 1.0 will be released. Enjoy!" This is worth reading even if you skim toward the bottom and jump to the Intertwingle link. The Mozilla project isn't slapped together -- this kind of forethought and explanation is proof.

Windows users have IE, *.nix users have Konqueror (KDE 3's Konquero5r is excellent) OSX has omniweb, opera and IE. Mozilla is the answer to a question nobody asked. Too little far too late.

Mozilla was a cute concept at one time, but now it's more of a joke. I wish the Oprah browser was available for *nix, as it is even better. IE is by far the best browser on the market, in fact the gap is almost too large for Mozilla or any other browser to overcome.

Mozilla is a bad OpenSource example, it has never come near to what users would have wanted and expected from the project, I know that we should support and encourage all projects but enough is enough !!!

All builds crash, so who really cares about mozilla and its releases ?

Let them release roadmaps as they wish, they lost their credit. I dont believe this map will result in an acceptable Internet Browser on any of its stages, users just got tired of Mozilla. I did. None of the devellopers seems to have a clear notion of how ridiculous the project have become.

I have no hope to see a Linux browser with enough quality to chalenge Internet Explorer. And yes I am using TrueType fonts on Linux since XFree 4.x

Why does the Mozilla people change things repetedly instead of concentrating on the browser development ? Is that to call the attention of their users ? If it is they just get the worst kind of attention. They want to make a complete suite of mailing and Internet software but THEIR USERS would like to be able to use a SIMPLE (I mean simple!) Internet BROWSER (with no sidebar, no email, no composer, etc.) Why do they keep on working with AOL/Netscape goals ?

I get sad everytime I have to change to Windows to browse the internet, very sad. If I only need email I can use many Unix mailers but if I want browsing web pages I can't use anything just because there is only Netscape 4.9 !

I wish a NEW Unix browser project would start, preferably using GTK+.

Mozilla really sucks and Unix deserves better !

My question is... why to support such confused and troublesome project like Mozilla, where developers don't know where they go and do stupid decisions? This is a whole joke since Netscape Preview Release 1.

I don't know what browser sucks more in Linux. But Mozilla is definitely the most bloated and bad.

  8. mozilla is dying by ideut · · Score: 0, Troll

Unfortunately for the community, just as mozilla was becoming usable for everyday use, AOL TW have decided to close the source for the product once again. While this is certainly the best commercial decision they could make, it does leave the free software community with the rather daunting prospect of lacking a credible browser rendering engine. khtml is all very well and good, but I for one am not looking forward to the return to the dark old days of using a desktop which depends forever on proprietary libraries. Unfortunately, it looks like this problem will never be resolved, despite large efforts of persuasion on my part. It seems that some people just won't be told.

I am well aware of this - the fact that I can manually install an OJI-equipped plugin is why I'm able to test anything at all.

You should try this for yourself. Once you do what you suggest, go check out some applets. Yes, the news ticker at java.sun.com works. But try almonst _anything_ more complicated. You can use any of the applet directories... Even as of a few informal tests today, the 90% rule appears still in effect with 0.9.8. Almost no applets of any substance work, and Mozilla/JVM will quickly wedge in a busy loop (in my experiences after < 3 attempts).

Obviously, the fact that the installation glue is so abyssmal is a massive problem of its own, albeit a superficial one. But the API you refer to (the OJI) apparently is itself in a state of serious disrepair.
