Why Freenet is Complicated (or not)

Hazel presents the Freenet protocol as an overly complicated, self designed crypto layer.     Do these things work with digital cable? Most of the coolest stuff on HBO, Showtime, MTV2 is really only available with digital cable. Would these things work with that?
