ICANN CEO Proposes Radical Changes
Froomkin writes: "ICANN CEO Stuart Lynn today released a plan for a "strong" ICANN that would have 5 of 15 Board members selected directly by governments and the rest by registrars, registries, plus a few Board-squatter-like ringers chosen by the ICANN Board or staff. The main justifications offered for this shift are that in order to be "strong" ICANN needs more money, more support, and less "process". Of course, promises Lynn, ICANN's "core values of openness and broad participation" should be "preserved". (Don't laugh. It's not funny.) "Meaningful participation" will be achieved by cutting out any direct representation for end-users. Oh yes, ICANN wants a much bigger budget, and to be independent of the US Dept. of Commerce, and to get direct control of the root server operators too, all so as to ensure that ICANN has unimpeded ability to execute its (undefined, growing) "mission". ICANN was supposed to save the Internet from governments; since major interest groups such as the ccTLDs and RIRs won't do what ICANN wants, and won't pay it, ICANN now turns to governments to save it from the Internet. The proposal would eliminate any pretense of At-Large involvement in running ICANN - it would be solely a governmental and corporate body.

Now I actually *buy* DVDs of my favorite shows when available - even some of the ones I already have on disc or tape. It's a lot easier than clipping commercials - even with the loss of quality for some shows. My job means that I miss a lot of shows I like - hence the desire for PVR. Now I only watch about 10 hours of TV a week - my favorite shows - unlike most other people. Now it seems like a lot more trouble than it's worth.
Funny, I seem to remember the Supreme Court cracking down on the movie industry circa 1980 so you and I could tape TV shows on our VCRs. Seems like a class-action suit is going to be necessary again. Perhaps there will be enough grass-roots upswell to overturn the DMCA, but with the global tendrils it has it's going to be a damned hard fight.

Yesterday, we sent our full-page advertisement to the Washington Times,
and booked space for Tuesday, February 26.
They have until Monday to reject the ad.
So far, we've heard no objections. Which could mean the ad is acceptable. Or, it could mean they're kicking it upstairs for review.
We'll keep you posted.
We also sent a check for $8,835. (That's a few hundred dollars less than what we were quoted, because we qualified for a not-for-profit discount.)
So, barring a last-minute rejection, on Tuesday our ad WILL be delivered to every U.S. House member, every U.S. Senator, every major federal agency, the White House, and the Drug Czar's office.

As of 2:00 pm on Friday, we had raised a total of $43,574 for this project.
That means we're almost TWO-THIRDS of the way to the $69,800 we need to run our daring ad in the Washington Times and USA Today.
We already paid for the Washington Times. That newspaper will get us maximum visibility in Washington, DC.
But we also need to run the ad in USA Today.
Only USA Today reaches more than 2 million people. Only USA Today sets the agenda for talk radio shows across the country. And only USA Today is for sale in YOUR town, so you'll be able to buy a copy -- and see the ad in print.
