Criticize Online, Get Fined
maxpublic writes "Yet another outspoken critic of corporate America has been SLAPP'ed - only this time, Dan Whatley didn't even know he'd been sued until he was presented with a $450,000 judgement. For those who don't know, SLAPP stands for 'Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation' and is used to silence people who openly criticize thin-skinned corporations." In this case the company doing to suing is Xybernaut, the makers of
wearable computers mentioned here many times in the past. This article is a must
read. And now Xybernaut has joined Amazon and others on my list of Must-Avoid
companies. This is a creepy run around the 1st Ammendment, and you should
be aware.
In the morning is really fun! I love partial integration!
"Nora," ... "among several outspoken posters sued last year by Viragen, a small biotech firm in Florida that is trying to genetically engineer chickens to lay cancer-curing eggs"
She deserves to be sued, speaking out against Mother Goose like that.
All Americans are free!

The Presidential election wasn't decided in Florida.
It was decided in the Incumbents' states: Tennesee and Arkansas. The states that should have best known the Democratic party candidates.
The margin for the electoral vote counts was such that if Al Gore had won in either of those states, he would have had enough electoral votes to win and the vote in Florida would not have mattered.
In other words, the incumbent couldn't even get the voters in his home state to vote for him.
It's sorta ironic in a discussion about a slander case to see that yellow journal 'The Nation' mentioned.
You do realize that this makes the 'Bush really won the election' side look completely stupid, right? Lots of presidents don't get their home state.
And as an aside, Gore was not the 'incumbent', the incumbent was Bill Clinton. And, yes, the presidental election was decided in Florida, legal decisions there (And in Washington about there.) decided the course of the election.
If corporations are people, aren't stockholders guilty of slavery?
Anyone got a copy of Todd Hayes "Karen Carpenter Story" the anime biopic of dear departed one using Ken and Barbie as models? It had to be pulled from distro about 15 yrs ago, not because of objection from Carpenter survivors, or even from the record company (A&M?), but because Mattel chose to silence an indie filmmaker. SO even before SLAPP they were off the leash.
