Bug in zlib Affects Many Linux Programs

SirTimbly writes: "CNET is reporting that there is a buffer overflow problem with zlib in linux, which is used for network compression. Supposedly, someone could remotely cause a buffer overflow through mozilla, X11 and many other programs." The advisory from Red Hat is available.

Funny, wan't this supposed to be impossible under Open Source?

Seriously, it looks like maybe it isn't so simple. In the "golden days" a lot of companies bought into the idea that Open Source code was free from these types of major flaws... now they see this isn't true.

So, when the glow is off the rose we see that Linux is no more reliable (thanks to 4.2) and no more secure than a well maintained Windows 2000/XP system.

And that's something some of us knew all along :)

Of course MacOS is safe. Nobody gives a rat's ass about Macs, 1337 hax0rs included. Why waste time targeting the three Mac users on the planet when there are millions of Windos users.

There are no bugs with XP.

    Really.

Ignore the crashes - it's just your imagination.

Ask yourself - would you rather know about a bug? Or have someone knowledgeable deny it exists? Even when you have a CD with the bug fix installed on another computer.

But, still, the safest implementation should always be the default. That's a basic tenet of any computer security study. Linux has already ripped off BSD's VM and TCP/IP stacks; it may as well rip off their superior malloc() implementation as well.
