Computers Summarize the News

oily_ants writes "I get sick and tired of reading the same story on different web sites. That's why I like slashdot so much. Good (??) summaries of all of the stuff out there on the net. Now there is a project at Columbia University by the nlp group that attempts to generate computer summaries of all of those news articles on different web sites. The project is called Newsblaster and the summaries are excellent. You can read about the project on regular news sites like Online Journalism Review or USA Today."

Its bold of slashdot to have an article about technology that may put them out of business. Why not go ahead and put up other articles that are just as bold? ;-)

Good quote, too many chars. Seriously, the slashdot 120 char limit sucks!

    Computers are dying.

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered computing community when last month goatse.cx confirmed that computers account for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of the latest Netcraft survey which plainly states that computers have lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Computers are collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict computing's future. The hand writing is on the wall: computers face a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for computers because computers are dying. Things are looking very bad for computers. As many of us are already aware, computers continue to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood. Computers are the most endangered of them all.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Computing leader Theo DeRaadt states that there are 7000 users of computers. How many users of computers are there? Let's see. The number of computer versus mennonite posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 computer users. Computer posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of computer posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of computers. A recent article put computers at about 80 percent of the computing market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 computer users. This is consistent with the number of computer Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of computers, abysmal sales and so on, WindRiver went out of business and was taken over by Palm, Inc. who sell another troubled appliance. Now Palm, Inc. is also dead, its corpse turned over to another charnel house.

All major surveys show that computers have steadily declined in market share. Computers are very sick and their long term survival prospects are very dim. If computers are to survive at all it will be among hobbyist dabblers. Computers continue to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save them at this point in time. For all practical purposes, computers are dead.

    Fact: computers are dead.

The Slash workaround for this Microsoft bug has been fixed and
committed, and will go live on Slashdot with the next code
    refresh.

For the record, of the two suggested fixes submitted by trolls:
the first rejected many legitimate comments, the second generated
HTML that hung Internet Explorer (!), and neither could have
    prevented "page-widening."

    • ogg.google.com
    • divx.google.com
We should have a poll! Ah crap, I guess they probably won't do any of that. Instead we'll probably get:
