Comments on USB-Equipped Ethernet Print Servers?

An Anonymous Coward asks: "I'm looking to purchase an external Ethernet print server with an USB printer interface. I've only found two such beasts HP JetDirect 175x and Sercomm PS5800). Do I have any other hardware options? Do USB print servers work with any USB printer, or are there driver issues?" Comments, anyone? Information about running such a box under free operating systems would also be nice.

"Information about running such a box under free operating systems would also be nice." Well done Timothy. Way to toe the party line. God dammit. Maybe, just maybe, there is an all-in-one solution for $150 that does the job so that you merely plug in to the wall and away you go. Maybe the person who asked the question has no experience of Open/Free software such as Linux and doesn't see the point of deploying a whole new O/S just to manage a print queue. Maybe there is a decent Windows (gasp!) or OS X solution for this problem? Pick the right tool for the job - Don't restrict your due diligence to simply checking if the product has a cool penguin sticker. In other news, Ask Slashdot recieved a question about how to plug in a toaster. 98% of replies mentioned using Google to search for answer first, provided it was done so using Linux.
