WindowShade X 2.0 Released

slava writes "Unsanity has released a major update to its award-winning haxie, WindowShade X. This haxie (stands for 'Mac OS X hack') adds to Mac OS X the window-collapsing features found in Mac OS 8/9. The new version 2.0 adds some new features, including control over exactly how thick you want your window shadows to be, option-clicking to minimize all windows in current application, a new installer, and more. Get more information and screenshots or download it."

Don't get me wrong and mod me down as flamebait...I love this haxie and have a registered copy.

But c'mon /. this article is basically an advertisement you have posted here...

"Award winning"? I'd be very interested to know what awards this won. Not to mention the contributor, "Slava", is the programmer who wrote this.

What makes it extra crazy is...
      • this is just an update, not even a new program
      • the program is a remake of a hack that has been around for about a decade (System 7, right?)
      • the program isn't free (as in anything)
      • even worse, the demo is timed and lasts half an hour or something.

I do like the program; it implements an obvious and useful GUI feature that is built in to just about everything except Windows (hell, even Blackbox). And at $7 it is a better buy than most shareware. But putting it on slashdot alongside notices of new versions of entire operating systems available for free is a little much, Mac section or no.

I've been complaining about this all day. We've got some Direct X product for the Mac, and VisiBone has added another color chart to their product line.

FUCK WHO CARES. This is marketing stuff, not news for nerds.

Can I submit some copy from anyone and get it published? Like this?

So thanks for posting the story, guys. At least I like it.

But why does this have to come from some strange third party source? Is this an indication on a micro-level that OS X will become a distro of gathered goods from everywhere like Linux?

Not that this particular development is all that impressive, but if OS X gets much more impressive I may have to switch!

dude, windowshade started as a 3rd party INIT on the Mac in, like, 1992 or 1993. Then Apple integrated that functionality into, hmm, system 7.6 or so.

and just to emphasize the point - Linux followed the Mac on this, not the other way around. Just as with spring-loaded folders, it's been missing from OS X because the NeXT kiddies didn't have it. You can bet it'll come, though. Does Linux have spring-loaded folders?
