Japan Builds World's Fastest Computer

claylikethemud writes "The New York Times reports that Japan has built the world's most powerful supercomputer from "640 specialized nodes that are in turn composed of 5,104" NEC processors. The machine boasts the computing power equivalent to the 20 fastest American supercomputers combined, and with a top speed of 35.6 teraflops, outpaces the next fastest machine, the ASCI White Pacific, by more than factor of five. Applications include climate modeling, global warming prediction, and other non-weapons research."

    They are just too smart and clever compared to the Americans. Anything the U.S. does, Japan can do better.

    This is one more example of that.

    Japan was all too quick to jump into bed with the axis and the Nazis in WW2. Luckily we gave them a royal asspounding for that, but we should not be so quick to heap praise upon them.

    I bet this isn't the only post we'll see pointing this out. The Japanese are great, the Americans are evil.

    Let me tell you, those weapons serve a purpose. When the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids takes action, you'll thank God Almighty we have the Bomb!

    Just 'cause it's massively parallel doesn't make it "faster". This is about like saying distributed.net has built the worlds fastest computer. Computer power DOES NOT scale linearly with CPUs; this puppy is only good for a very limited problem set (e.g. brute force encryption cracking).
