GeForce4 Ti 4200 Preview

Mike Chambers writes "Hi All, I've completed a preview of NVIDIA's GeForce4 Ti 4200 graphics chipset. Although the preview contains your typical benchmarks, it's centered around game play and antialiasing image quality. Here's a list of the games involved - Quake 3 & Team Arena, IL-2 Sturmovik, Nascar Racing 2002 Demo, Jedi Knight 2, Serious Sam 2, Max Payne Demo, Comanche 4 Demo, Dungeon Siege and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 Demo. Since antialiasing image quality, especially Quincunx and 4XS, was an important aspect of the preview, all of the screen shots were saved in high quality PNG format. For those Slashdot readers that are avid gamers, you might want to check this out."

This is slightly off topic, but I think it is at least somewhat appropriate. Gas Powered Games new release, Dungeon Siege, is one of the most beautiful 3D games I've ever seen, but reading on forums about it I realized that even a Geforce3 with a killer Athlon XP system would still only let the game run around 20-30 fps. People have been complaining like mad about this, because the very reason the spend so much money on the best possible systems is so they can get a high fps. But, somebody on one of the forums said that since the entire game is rendered in 3D, the FPS is quite irrelvent (the frame does not actually refresh, but each element on the screen moves at its own pace). So, taking this information as fact, does this mean that the only games that the GF4 would be worthwile for would be UT2002 and such games?

There are many types of waffles. Some are belgian, some are fruity, some come from Waffle House and taste like baked shit. Some have sugar in them, but it's rumored that this is a European Communist Plot to make everybody fat. Some are "Eggos", which you are supposed to "Leggo". Some are cheap and generic, others cost upwards of a thousand dollars for a single helping. There are those you eat plain, and others go better with toppings, such as powdered sugar and Maple Syrup.

My favorite type of waffle is Belgian with fruit and stuff on top. Now that's a fucking good waffle. But there are other options... in fact, there's something for everyone!

Yes, waffles. A timeless American tradition.

Fuck waffles, let's talk about my air conditioner.

It recently got up to about 90 degrees around here, so I decided it was time to plug in the ol' air conditioner. It's at least 20 years old, I literally can't remember a time when I didn't have it.

Usually I put it in my bedroom, but this time I decided to put it in the living room to see whether it could cool the whole apartment. I have my music equipment out there, so the extra white noise is kinda sketch. But hey, why not give it a whirl.

I had some extra carbon pre-filter lying around, just enough to replace the front filter, something I'd never done before. That's clutch because you really can't let dust clog up that grill. I also had a pack of shims that I bought from Home Depot, and I used these to jam up the window so that the AC can't fall out. Shims, heh. A buck fifty, turned out to be a great buy.

After running the AC for a few hours, temperature in my apartment dropped from 87 to 84. After a couple days, it stabilized at around 74, and the dry air made it feel cool. Unfortunately, I think it was probably even cooler outside...

Other problem is, I can probably buy a new AC for the cost of one month's electricity bill. But how can I give this thing up? It's as old as I am and it still works. Not to mention, I can finally lift and install the thing now that I'm in my twenties. You gotta love that shit, my AC is keeping it real.

I'm participating in the Slashdot blackout. I still read and post there, but I am sick of the steady flow of crap from CmdrTaco and the editors. I guess you could call it pointless - after all I like K5 more and participate here more.. why don't I just stop going to Slashdot? Because there are still people here who say "This is a story for that other site." Nothing wrong with this, they're 2 different sites.

I'm interested in the Linux stuff, the MPAA stuff, and the 'gee-whiz' technology news you'll find there. So why stop visiting? The editors have pissed off enough readers to elicit a reaction - here's what pissed me off:
The "first slashdot troll post" moderation-fest - this perfectly demonstrated how immature and hypocritical the editors could be. CmdrTaco was at once expressing his desire to not censor anyone, and at the same time blatantly meddling with other people's posts and user status.
Big ads have become more annoying, yet editorial quality stays low. Many people over there have posted "This is why I will not subscribe" when they post misleading, duplicate, or simply dumb stories. The editors' write-ups are often inane and misspelled.. they are days late on big news (inexplicably rejecting a story many times before posting it late).
CmdrTaco's unabashed disdain for his own users. Users pay his salary, and at the same time he makes comments like the one that inspired the blackout.
I guess I have mixed feelings about it, but I am participating. I hope it does make a difference. I may put Slashdot down, but I haven't totally given up on the site yet. It used to be a good site, really. Is the blackout babyish? Maybe.. I certainly wouldn't pull that kind of thing over here, because I respect the editorial staff here. I do not respect Slashdot's editors, and I guess the blackout is a way of showing them that. If CmdrTaco bothered to respond to users' posts, I think there would be a lot fewer people participating.

Yep. I am continually surprised at how often I am clicking away DoubleClick cookies and ActiveX requests on a supposedly open-source site.

Moderation is crap. Sure, a post may look interesting or insightful standing on its own, but taken in context it is more often redundant or off-topic. Take the Phantom Edit. A guy who posted a link to phantomeditor.com got a 5 Informative. Wow, good job! Now if somebody had posted saying they actually saw the movie, that would have deserved a 5. Barring that, hell, give the 5 to the runner-up. If that post came across my meta-mod screen, I'd have a hard time modding it back down, because that's how Slashdot has defined Informative.

Of course, I have never seen the moderation system itself, because even though I have posted 140 well-reasoned comments, my karma stands at a middling 17. I could have, you know, 100 or 200 karma by now. Thus, I have to assume that most of my posts are never even read.

Discussions are too fast, they bloat up to 100 comments inside of a few minutes. And then they are gone, relegated to Older Articles before anyone gets a chance to make a solid point. God forbid a news story should develop slowly over time. That would be...deep!

Half the stories posted are to links that are so brief and shallow that the entire discussion ends up being off-topic. How about that X-Files story, huh? One big long messy troll.

There are a lot of smart people on Slashdot, and every once in a while one of them responds to my posts and keeps me on my toes. That's why I come back, because there is an audience here.

I'd like to graduate to a better site, but most of them are too specific or low-volume. I stopped reading ArsTechnica, for example, when I read through the entire site. Only took a couple of weeks. But I learned a lot, that's for sure. I suspect Slashdot maintains its high-volume system because it keeps us idiots coming back.

Slashdot has the right idea, but the wrong editorial direction. A web community it is not. I waste a lot of my time here, and I can't say I'm getting any smarter for it. I certainly haven't made any friends, or even identified the better posters, although there are plenty to be sure.

Well, Slashcode is free, maybe it's time somebody put it to better use. I'd like to discuss music, lifestyle, and politics, and I'd like technical posts to be done in a way that I actually learn something. I can't remember ever trying out something because I heard about it on Slashdot.

I'd like the people who are running this new site to know what Informative is, and to be willing to stamp out posts that are not. I'd like them to understand what peer review is, so that the common denominator is not egotistical ranting but actual documented fact. I shouldn't have to wade through 25 posts to get to the point where people actually agree on what the facts are. Once they do, the facts should stand on their own and the cruft eliminated. Nobody in the Slashdot editorial team is willing to put in this kind of work.

You know how much time it would take to edit a 400-comment discussion to the point that it becomes concise and readable? An hour or two to read through, delete crap, reorganize a few things, and post a summary. Never been done. Instead, we all have to wade through this crap, moderate it and meta-moderate it, and it still ends up looking the same. It's a fucking weak system if I ever saw one.

Maybe I should edit a discussion just to show how easy it is. Cliff's Notes for the masses, that's what I say. Let Cliff do the work. I'll be Cliff, too, if I have to. I'm good at it.
