PHP functions

What bugs me about php is how all of the functions are built in. For instance the database access functions are all built in and are specific to the database. I.E. SOmething like mysql_connect() is a function. So not only are your function names long, but if you change backends you have to replace all of your function calls, unless you feel like writing a wrapper for DB stuff. I much prefer perl and CPAN, especially since it makes finding docs very easy.

A little OT. and more than a little miffed.
I will use www.hercules.co.uk as an example of what has happened to the web.
Attempt to view this web page with lynx. If lynx is too esoteric for you view try to view the hercules site with 'automatic loading of images turned off'. You will see absolutely fucking nothing. Are these web designers on crack. Even with a DSL connection I cannot view this site with 'automatic loading of images turned on'. It takes minutes to scroll from the top of the site to the bottom.
Please for the love of God ignore the 'morons with a vision' at microsoft, doubleclick, and a host of other companies that feel that the 'web experience' should resemble watching a video game. Speed, yes it was an absolutely horrible movie, but what I want on the web is speed and even with DSL, web sites have begun to grind to a halt all because of these 'morons with a vision'. The web, believe it or not, is for everyone. That means that for every web site their needs to be a lowest common denominator. That means a text only option. Its simple. Its clean. And its very, very fast. So if you could please take a minute from your crack smoking schedule and set up a text only option the world will be grateful.
For all of the 10s of thousands of dollars you waste on web design you are going to get a lot more customers looking at your site if you have a text only option. Do you Pay for bandwidth? Let me give you a quick remedy. Fire the 14 year old web master or burn your CMS software and write up your web pages with a text editor. I want to be able to view your site even if I am on a 28.8 modem. That's what the web is all about.
And finally if I have to use a specific browser to view your site, well, you just lost a customer. If you can view that site with IE, even with automatic loading of images turned off then the web has turned mean.
