Doom III Officially Announced

Jacek Fedorynski writes "The end is near. First, id Software's site is updated for the first time since the Quake II times and now they officially announce Doom III!" If you recall, there were some screenshots released last year, but I don't think there's been much since then - these are probably out of date.

If there is one thing that I have learned in the past few years while studying the code of John Carmack, it is that he is a very weak coder and very much behind the times when it comes to delivering quality and using discipline and following processes while coding.

It is more important to fully understand the problem before you try to forumulate your answer. But, Carmack seems to code with reckless abandon.

Some of you may wonder why Doom 3 has been delayed by more than a year, but I know the answer.

Compare this to Unreal Tournament 2003, which is by far a superior enginge. The source code to Unreal Tournament is pure C++ whereas Doom 2 is raw and ugly C.

Unreal Tournament 2003 is going to completely and finally establish Epic as the king of 1st person shooters.

    No.

Pure hand optimized assembler with no compiled C code is the only way to go. Ask Steve Gibson if you don't believe me. This is especially true with RISC CPUs. I have taken MANY PA-RISC C programs and rewrote them using pure assembler and have gained a 5-10X speed increase, at the minimum, on all of them. The latest instruction set of the PA-8700 is especially speed tweakable.

People say with modern compilers, the speed difference between fine-tuned assembler and compiled C code is negligible. I say HORSE SHIT. I can write much faster assembler code than any compiler and I defy anyone to demonstrate any different.
