Anti-Competitive Behavior in the Printer Industry?

Greyfox writes: "Here is an interesting story about the printer industry versus ink-cartridge refillers. Anyone who's bought a low-cost inkjet knows that you can spend over half the cost of the printer on ink. So it was only natural that an industry would spring up around refilling the cartridges. Well the printer industry has apparently been fighting back, trying to protect their market share. As with all good stories, legislation is being considered. Worth a read." Sort of like spyware -- it's a back-and-forth battle.

Why don't the printer manuf's just sue under the DMCA? These refillers are obviously getting around their special little chips, so it must be a violation. Go big business go!

    Pay $500 or $600 for a printer, no-way!

I do not believe that it costs so much to manufacture printers that they would need to charge $500 to return a reasonable profit. If so then Epson, HP, Canon and the others need to examine their manufacturing techniques.

A new microwave, simple TV, etc does not cost $500. Printers can't be so complicated/expensive to produce. They are mostly plastic with a few moving parts and electronic components.
