I haven't watched the show (except by accident), since the '95 season. And after watching the finale, I'm glad I didn't. Cuz I didn't miss a thing. You poor fuckers that have been watching it all these years, pretending it's good, hoping for a payoff, got what you deserved. Godo riddance.

The truth, in a sense, was that they explained religion. The secret they have been hiding since day one of the show is that God is in fact alien beings from the heavens(any culture 2000 years ago would have called a flying ship God). And the invasion of 2012 is the foretold second coming of Christ.
I think the big secret is that mankind spent 2000 years worshipping a God that wasn't even a God, and that all religion is one big lie.
There IS a culture that believes strongly in this principle, and their art and stone carvings depict beings from the sky visiting the earth.
Carter did nothing but regurgitate what certain cultures have believed for thousands of years.
