3D Visualization Moves Forward

Chris writes "Showing for the first time at the Society for Information Display (SID) conference in Boston was a three-dimensional display with 100 million volume pixels or "voxels". The Perspecta is a hardware and software combination that projects 3D images inside a 500 mm transparent spherical dome. Images 250 mm in diameter can be seen from a full 360 degrees without goggles, allowing the viewer to walk around the image. It can be used to visualize protein structures and to plan surgical and radiation treatment by locating the exact position of a tumour on an x-ray or mammogram. It could also be used in air traffic control, prototype designing and security scanning of luggage. Perspecta uses Texas Instruments' digital light processor technology and a spinning projection screen, which sweeps the sphere." We've done some previous stories about this globe from Actuality Systems. The trend seems to be toward simulating 3D with high-resolution flat screens, though.

    It is official. Netcraft now confirming: Trolling Is Here To Stay

    One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Slashdot community
    when IDC confirmed that trolling market share has increased yet again, now up to more than
    15 percent of all posts. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states
    that trolling has gained more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all
    along. Trolling is becoming organized, as fittingly exemplified by firsts posts in the recent
    Troll Admin comprehensive trolling test.

    You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict trolling's future. The hand writing is
    on the wall: Trolling faces a promising future. In fact the future is so bright soon
    Slashdot will be 100% trolls. Things are looking very good for trolls. As
    many of us are already aware, trolls continues to gain market share. First posts flow like a
    river of blood.

    Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

    Slashdot leader CmdrTaco states that there are
    5000 regular Slashdot posters. How many trolls
    are there? Let's see. The number of non trolls versus troll posts on Slashdot is roughly in ratio of 6 to 1. Therefore
    there are about 5000/6 = 833 trolls. First posts on Slashdot are about 1/10 of the volume of other
    trolls. Therefore there are about 83 regular first post attempters. A recent
    article put non first post trolling at about 80 percent of the troll market.
    Each troll has roughly 2 accounts for trolling. Therefore there are (833+83)*2 =
    1832 troll accounts. This is consistent with the number of trolls posts.

    All major surveys show that trolling has steadily increased in market share.
    Trolling is very healthy and its long term survival prospects are very good. If
    regular posting is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers.
    Trolling continues to grow. Nothing short of a miracle could stop it at this
    point in time. For all practical purposes, trolling is here to stay.

    Islam vs. Hindu is bullshit. What you have is India vs. Pakistan. You also had Iran vs. Iraq, and both countries are islamic. Nothing to do with religion; neighbors will fight over anything (it's part of being neighbors). Look at Ireland and England, for example.

    Islam vs. Judaism is also bullshit. What you have is Arab countries vs. Israel (just as you would have America vs. China if all of a sudden the chinese decided to invade an american state and start colonizing it).

    Islam vs. Buddhism is, again, bullshit. They destroyed the statues because images of idols (any idols - including Muslim) are against their religion. In fact, they're also forbidden by Christian doctrine, but most christians don't take their own religion very seriously. No muslim country has ever tried to invade or attack a buddhist country.

    There is one country in the world that has been involved in about 90% of wars in the last three centuries, and started about 50% of those (including civil wars in other countries). That country is called USA. It is also the country that produces the most pollution on Earth, the country with the biggest arms production and the country that owes most money to the UN. It is also one of the few democratic countries where the media (TV, papers, internet, etc.) are censored.

    Finally (and this is the really nasty bit), it is the country where the Big Mac was created.
