Games in High School?

Joe Griego of Bishop Union High School, CA asks: "I'm the Director of I.T. for a small school district, and we've implemented a 'Game Night' for our kids. We open the lab once or twice a month, and let the kids sign up for the lab computers (we have 34 of them), and play LAN games until the wee hours. It's a lot of fun for the kids, and I enjoy seeing them use the computers for recreation, as opposed to purely academic purposes. However, my question would be - do other high schools even do this?" Judging by the post-Columbine reactions from the government, parent's groups, school systems, and the media, if a school is doing this, it's probably on the QT. Personally, I think this is a great idea, it keeps kids off of the streets and their parents know where they are. What do you think?

"I'd like to know what sorts of games would be best for this activity? We play Age of Empires II, Starcraft/Broodwar, and MechWarrior IV. I would have liked to include first person shooters (for the gameplay), but I'm limited by parental concerns, and perceptions in the community. As a school administrator and parent, I understand these concerns in a way the kids perhaps do not.

Are there other games that would be suitable for a school sponsored event? I'd love to hear about experiences at other schools."

Don't you think open source software would be more popular if it were advocated by girls like this instead of old guys with beards? What we need are more free software babes like her. This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. If we do have to have the old guys with beards, we could at least make sure they are plenty of hot chicks too. I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she make you hard? I know this little hottie floats my boat!

  2. My experience with HS lanparties by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Troll

I arrived as the new sysadmin at a local HS a few years ago. On my first day there, I noticed some kids playing Quake II in the Graphics lab. I immediately shouted, "NO FUCKING GAMES YOU SONS OF WHORES!" I took the student closest to me, picked him by his shirt, and threw him onto the ground. I then took his computer monitor and smashed it on the ground. I took out the Quake II CD and crushed it over his face while I stood on him. The rest of the students by now were noticeable distressed. A few ran to the door (where I was standing) while others backed away. Using a keyboard I whacked the first student who came running. Two others I snared using a couple of mouses, whom I them choked to death. The last few started arming themselves with monitors and keyboards, but they were no match. I got one in a headlock and rammed his head into a monitor that was turned on. I got a couple of pairs of speakers in each hand, and I started knocking the last students in the head. They were pretty bloody, but still conscious. I decided to leave the room then, satisfied at a job well done. The principal walked in as I started leaving, attracted by the screams. He gave me a high-five on the way out. Needless to say, it'd be far better if more schools carried policies like this.

My H.S. is so bad that they restrict every computer. You can't change the preferences, see the icons in the desktop, and stuff like that. All the computer suck, they're all 80s machines with 16MB and win95.

ANYTHING! that keeps these punk-ass kids from stealing my car stereo again is ok in my book!

seriously, the wack jobs that said "we learned how to do this by playing (insert FPS here)" were probably missing some other important social skills that would have been developed had, 1.) their parents played a more active role in their lives, and 2.) they had a place to experience various social interactions such as....A Lan Party!. so a Lan Party may not be the Boy Scouts, but do you think if little billy and bobby had attended Lan Parties at school and got to know the people there, they might have hesitated enough at the thought of a killing spree not to do it?
