Sicilian Suspension Bridge to Go Ahead

SpanningTheGap writes "According to the BBC, Italy plans on building a suspension bridge connecting the Italian mainland with the island of Sicily. The bridge will be five kilometers long and its central span will be over three kilometers long, easily breaking the old record length for a suspension bridge. The artist's conception image of the monster is a sight to see. Another article with more info can be found here." There's a website with assorted technical info about the design.

Seriously, how few explosive do you think it would take to bring down the whole thing, being a suspension bridge? It's an attack waiting to happen.

Cntrlled Cntur Trlling and Slipping Cntur trlling is smething that I really enjy. Cntur trlling will allw yu t present yur bait right in frnt f the walleyes nse. In cld frnt cnditins this is essential. What yu're trying t d is stay n a particular depth, r cntur, where it lks like the walleyes are hlding. Walleyes are a structure riented fish, mst f the time. Yu might find large schls n sme Great Lakes that dn't relate t specific structure, but by an large they seek ut structure. These walleyes will be tight t the bttm, laying in the hles between rck and cuts in the bttm. They may be feeding, r waiting in ambush t find an easy meal that cmes their way. When fishing structure, yu have t be able t stay tight t the structure r yur lure presentatin will nt be in the strike zne f the fish. Mve just a bat length away and yu will be ut f luck. The key t lcating walleyes in the river in the spring and early summer starts with lcating a series f bstacles and then allwing yur bait r lure t present itself in a natural manner s the walleye can race frm behind the bstructin t acquire the ffering and then race back int the slack water area t digest his meal and await anther. In the spring f the year the turbidity f the water subsides and walleyes are mre visually stimulated as they see fd flating by the slack water areas. This is nt t say that all walleyes see their fd befre they strike and in sme cases they strike mre ut f vibratin and smell than they d frm visual identificatin. Althugh the backtrlling technique is still ideal fr vertical jigging and live-bait rigging in deep water, walleye prfessinals tday favr trlling frward with a small ?kicker,? typically a 9.9 t 15 hp utbard. Why? It allws them t fish large bdies f water such as reservirs mre effectively at higher speeds that electric trlling mtrs can sustain. Trllers cmmnly use crankbaits, bttm buncers r weighted three-way rigs with crankbaits, spinners r spns. T really slw dwn and fllw the cnturs I use the sea anchr tied ff the bw r starbard side f the bat. This acts like a brake and if I have t keep the rpm?s up a little n my kicker r big mtr it still gives me cntrl t make an inside curve r t allw the lure t track evenly behind the bat n the cntur. If I want t jig a prductive area fr walleyes the Drift Cntrl sea anchr cmes inhandy here als. It gives me cntrl ver the stern f my bat s I can fish a given cntur perpendicularly. By attaching the Drift Cntrl t the stern cleat adjacent t the current it gives me a brake that slws dwn the drift f the back end f my bat and I can crrect the angle with the bw munt trlling mtr. r I can als attach anther ne t the same side f bat in the bw giving me mre drag and a slwer presentatin when I vertically jig this cntur. ne reasn that I like t use jigs while fishing fr spring walleyes in a river system is the cntrl an angler has. Vertically jigging fr walleyes gets my bld pumping and believe me n thse cl crisp spring days when it wuld be nice t be n shre burning a campfire. I need all f my bld pumping just t stay warm. With the prper head design and weight, jigs are the mst versatile f all river techniques, frm the shallwest flded cver t the deepest, fastest current. The majrity f river fishing with jigs invlves either slipping the current r drift fishing the current breaks. The presentatin is a simple lift-drp-pause methd f jigging, raising the jig sme 3 t 6-inches as yu slip dwnstream. The jigs that I prefer t use are Fireball jigs because f the runded head. The runded head allws the jig t bump alng the bttm and nt get hung up in snags r brush. If yu are as vertical as pssible, the jig will stand up allwing the hk t be expsed away frm the flr f the river. When yu tip the jig with a flathead minnw the minnw stands up and lks like it is trying t pick up the jig. As the minnw struggles against the weight f the jig it sends ff wunded signals and the natural scent attracts the walleyes and allws them t hang n just that much lnger. If the walleyes seem t be just biting the tails ff the minnws the Fireball ffers an additinal eye s yu can easily attach a stinger hk. The stinger hk is a great additin in thecld waters f spring and summer. Clrs f the jigs shuld be bright in dingy water. Clrs such as flurescent range, chartreuse and my all time favrite gld are great fr fishing thse spring walleyes. Anytime that yu can bring attentin t yur bait it will help yu up yur dds fr catching thse spring walleyes. Weights may range frm 1/8 t 1/2 unces, but yu shuld stay with the weight that is the lightest that will allw yu have cntact with the bttm. River walleyes have a tendency nt t suspend as much as the walleyes in the lake and yu dn?t have t wrry abut missing a strike zne that is in the fish clumn. I will tip my jig with sme plastic if I want t slw dwn the rate f fall, but current usually fights gravity faster and defeats the purpse f vertical jigging. Slack water fish can als be fund by pitching jigs f 1/16 t 1/8 unce t shreline r cver like flded wd r bulders. The angler in this situatin shuld use a lift drp retrieve t slip r quarter the jig dwnstream as it is retrieved back t the bat. This is a super tactic fr fishing eddies, wing dams r shallw mid river shals. Even in slack water areas I will use the Drift Cntrl sea anchr t slw dwn my presentatin and t stay with active feed walleyes. This same technique is als ne that I use when I fish large bdies f water like Lake Erie. When yu find the feeding fish and there is nt a structural element t stay with yu really want t thrw a Drift Cntrl sea anchr ut and stay with thse fish. therwise yu culd be blwn ff the spt and away frm the active fish. Being in cntrl whether yu are fishing a trlling a cntur, slipping the current r wind r fishing slack water r big expansive waters is the key t catching mre fish. I hpe these techniques prduce fr yu and hpe t see yu n the water sn!

I live in Canada and every time I go to the USA I am shocked at the driving. This is mainly in New York and Michigan states. I see more stomach-churning driving there in a day than I do in a decade in Canada. This is not exaggeration. And the rudeness ... oh the rudeness of those drivers. It makes my blood boil.

One thing I noticed about American roads (I am from Canada) is that the police enforcement of speed limits is much more thorough than North of the border. Does it span a similar spectrum as the driving skill? Typically on Canadian highways that I have driven on you drive 20-40% above the speed limit as a rule. Once you get 60% above it the cops might come after you if you happen to pass one (which is atypical, except on holiday weekends when they are out in force.)

Also the laws in some US states (NY) that double traffic fines in construction zones, are IMHO, a good idea and I have never seen such things in Canada.

Most every country as its share of bad drivers, I think. I have heard of some true madness from driving test examiners (in Canada) about old ladies who literally drove down the wrong side of the driveway but I have never seen such a spectacle.

Perhaps it is that both the USA and Canada have very well developed road systems that were designed for big cars. The roads are wide, smooth, well marked with lines, barriers, traffic lights, crosswalks, and well patrolled by cops. All of these measures lower the threshold for driving skills and thus stupider and stupider drivers can make forays onto the streets.

If you look at a country like Trinidad (where I vacationed once) you have to drive along narrow mountain passes at night and honk your horn as you are coming around blind corners so you don't bump into a car going the other way since the road is only 1.5 lanes wide and sometimes chunks of it crumble and fall into the sea or get blocked by falling debris from the cliffside. The driving skill threshold is much higher there and probably is similarly high in Europe because of the small congested streets that were not really designed for cars. In those cases it is about natural selection because the stupidest drivers will get into accidents and kill themselves or at least drive their car repair and insurance costs so high that they can't afford it.
