ICANN's Time Is Up, According To John Gilmore

EyesWideOpen writes: "Salon has a lengthy interview with Cygnus Software co-founder John Gilmore about why he feels it's time for ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, to go. Gilmore, along with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is currently helping to fund a lawsuit filed by ICANN director Karl Auerbach against ICANN. ICANN has denied Gilmore access to its financial information, providing the basis for the lawsuit. Gilmore states: 'I believe it's because there is information in there about how ICANN has misused its money, and/or has favored people who lent or gave it money.'"

Oh gimme a break. I think part of the point of that game was to pass it around on geeks sites like /. not announced it on their front page, that would be kind of tacky.

It's a stupid flash game, someone might have volunteed to make it for all I know. And probably took all of a day or two to whip up for someone decently experienced.

the eff is trying to get the word out, which was the point of that game. maybe a failed attempt, yes, but at least it was an attempt. If you have any other bright ideas to get the word out please let them know, if you contact the right people I'm sure they'll be intertested or at least think over your suggestion and act if it's a good one.

I'm ever surprised by the "duh" factor of some slashdot articles. Not to smack my favorite sacred cow, but come one, is this news? I guess, maybe, but not for the reasons thing were traditionally newsworthy.

"World Ends!" - Newsworthy, but kinda late.

    "Piazza Gay!" - ditto

"Sun Rises in East!" - Duh.

    "ICANN Corporate Whore!" - Duh.

Sadly, this isn't news, especially in this forum. Report on what happens. That's news. This, unfortunately, is common knowledge.

The problem is that The Hague have a very high standard of proof, and that the US have had no problem with this court passing judgement over others, and has even demanded it in many cases. (I'll quote the US department of state):
"The U.S. also is calling for Milosevic and other high-ranking Serbian officials to be tried as war criminals at The Hague."
This position of "it's good enough for the people we don't like, but not for us" makes it look like the US has something to hide, and only wants to use the war crimes tribunal to railroad it's enemies, and themself be free of any responsibilities.
This could undermine the authority of the court if others follow the US example. The whole point of the tribunal is to enforce rules that apply uniformly to everyone.

What Bush is doing is actually different than what at least one other US president did. Bill Clinton supported The Hauge (as far as I know).

I think Bush is making a big mistake, it will come back to bite the world bigtime if he neuters this court.
    Hope not though...
