Russia Wants to Launch Manned Mission to Mars
Raul654 writes "The Maimi Herald, via the Associated Press, is reporting that Russia wants to launch a manned mission to mars. The article says that the Russians are hoping to work closely with the European Space Agency and/or NASA. The 6 person, 440 day trip would cost around $20 billion. Should be interesting to see how this shapes up. See also here for mirror article."
Hell if there is (intelligent) life on Mars already maybe the Russians can get the Martians to launch their own mission to Earth so that they can meet them half way and share the costs (of course where "half way" means Russia pays ~0.01% of the costs and the Martians pick up the other 99.99%, where the Martians have to travel to Moscow themselves and the Russians will pay for the taxi cab that picks them up at the airport but due to lack of funding the taxi cab breaks down after "launch" and promptly blows up killing the Martians (those poor sons-of-bitches) and the enire cosmonaut crew driving the taxi). A very cost effective and probable scenario if I do say so myself, thank you very much!
I hereby propose we send a manned trip to mars.
Landing on mars will answer a bunch of unanswered questions. How exciting.
Now time to post the news on the news wires (reuters, asssociated press, new york times etc.) and have it linked from slashdot.
Ok, now that i have made the proposal time to do the congressional lobbying and plan.
This is soo exciting my own mars proposal.
I'd just be interested to see how they can afford this. They had to cancel their shuttle program (which was so much more advanced than NASA's shuttle that it's not funny) due to lack of funds. The few working shuttles they have are now on display and are unlikely to ever see the light of day. They have to take paying passengers to keep their thirty-year-old Soyuz fleet in space.
What we need is another space race. None of this co-operation with ESA or NASA, but another let's-get-there-before-the-Commies, before-the-decade-is-out JFK-style space race.
