Devil's BSD writes "Popular Science has a new article in this month's issue about gaming mods. It contains a nice history of mods, touches on mods for the Big Three gaming systems today (as well as those for computer games), and a beginner's guide to mods. Interesting, but not much new for the l33t h4x0rs out there though."

    [on by] A modest proposal

It seems that the Janitors, in their infinite wisdom, have banned people who have low/negative karma from posting more than twice per day. Personally I find this completely stupid.

All the trolls will simply post AC as I am doing now. Proxies can be used to get around any ipid bans that result from AC trolls.

Surely it is better to let the trolls post at -1 where it is out of most peoples way rather than have them all post at 0 and suck up mod points and time from "legit" users?

I have tried to communicate my thoughts to the slashcode team but alas, to no avail. They are probably all sittin on their starwars bed sheets watching anime hentai tentacle rape pr0n.

Here is my proposal: All trolls that cannot post using their account post as AC. Use proxies if need be (www.antiproxy.com is a good source). I suspect this will show them how useless this idea is. Will blocking troll uid's stop trolls? NO! will ipid bans stop trolls? NO!

I seriously fail to see the point of this and consider it a stupid move by the janitors.

They want us to troll and crapflood at 0 rather than -1? Fine! So be it! No longer will we post at -1 where few people dare to visit, now we will post at 0 where we will be more visible and waste peoples time, energy and mod points! Hoorah!

The next thing you know, posting AC will be banned! Then what will you do? No more posting interesting insider tidbits! Groupthink all the way baby! oh yeah!

So logout, post shit, use proxies and above all have fun!

But the code is Open Source [slashcode.com]:
    ('karma_adj','-10=Terrible|-1=Bad|0=Neutral|12=Pos itive|25=Good|99999=Excellent','Adjectives that describe karma, used if karma_obfuscate is set (best to keep aligned with badkarma, m2_maxbonus, and goodkarma)');

if we decide to change the cap, we'll definitely make sure that the space between the cap, and the bonus point privelege, is large than what a single moderator can do to a user.

Rob, a single moderator is capable of negatively moderating a user hundreds of times. This happens quite frequently [slashdot.org]. I think perhaps what you meant was that one single User who is not a 'User who can moderate 500 times' (Admins are Users too [sourceforge.net]).

Nothing gets users more riled up than alterations to the karma system. Well, some of them anyway. Most of them know not to care.

If people are supposed to 'know not to care', then why is it that you care enough about hiding information from your users to make this change while several pending browser rendering bugs are making your site unreadable? It must be awfully important. I think the reason you don't understand why people get upset is that you yourself don't post comments in stories. Which means you're talking about something which you have no experience with.

Personally, the only thing that annoys me is that you use user-created discussions to talk about META issues so that your posts can't be archived. Last time we tried to keep 'bumping' the SID but you went and deleted it anyway. Will that happen this time?
Why didn't you just enable comments in your journal? Isn't that what it's for?

It is now official. Netcraft confirms: *BSD is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered *BSD community when IDC confirmed that *BSD market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that *BSD has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. *BSD is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict *BSD's future. The hand writing is on the wall: *BSD faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for *BSD because *BSD is dying. Things are looking very bad for *BSD. As many of us are already aware, *BSD continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

FreeBSD is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time FreeBSD developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: FreeBSD is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

OpenBSD leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the *BSD market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeBSD went out of business and was taken over by BSDI who sell another troubled OS. Now BSDI is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major surveys show that *BSD has steadily declined in market share. *BSD is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If *BSD is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. *BSD continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, *BSD is dead.

    Fact: *BSD is dying

Slashdot editors once again continue their campaign of censorship. It has come to Egg Troll's attention that Jamie "Security Through Obscurity" McCarthy has sent a Cease and Desist order to our beloved Trollaxor [trollaxor.com] for a diary entry posted on his website that detailed a javascript exploit to Slashcode. [trollaxor.com]

The hypocracy in doing this is incredible. For a site that routinely condems companies that attempt such heavy-handed tactics shows that Slashdot is almost as morally bankrupt as VA/Systems soon will be. I would expect such tactics from the Church of Scientology or a Fortune 500 company. I guess Slashdot has learned: "If you can't beat them, join them!"

To make matters extra special, Jamie updated Slashdot's Slashcode, yet didn't release details of this exploit to other sites running Slashcode. [securityfocus.com] Guess its only important for Slashdot to look out for number one!

Is the imminent collapse of their parent company causing them all this stress? Or maybe its years of using that substandard open source software. Whatever the case, this is one of the slimiest things Slashdot has done since the First Troll Post Investigation. [kuro5hin.org]

For those wondering the code in question can be found here [slashdot.org].
